Soooo… this whole week has been spent tearing my hair out over the core physics code. Everything else is being held up by these issues that I’m trying to resolve with the lowest level collision code. Being a physics-based game, Cortex Command’s gameplay is entirely dependent on having this robust foundation, or things really go to pot.

A clear example is the ‘tunneling’ problems, where actors could glitch themselves through the terrain, no matter how hard or thick the materials. The AI-controlled skeleton actors loved to do this in previous test builds. But no more! Although there are still other ways to compromise the terrain through glitches, the major ones have been fixed:

Intact walls
Note how there’s no more tunneling, so the AI enemies have to pile bodies to get over those walls

Also, a lot of time and effort was spent experimenting with having invisible physics springs pulling things apart when two objects started to intersect. The initial method I tried failed miserably, resulting in things being very squishy and mushy feeling. I’ll work more on getting the MO-MO collision responses working better, and see if we can’t get a new build out soonish.

    I’ve never had any real issues with the tunneling, because I always digged the map to be so that the A.I. didn’t start tunneling. :S

    Hey, in the screenshots you have a cool Debug Mode, could you tell us how to use it?

    Also, you have 10 FPS! (The new version is not yet optimized, or the Debug Mode slows down the game? [Or you have a very crappy laptop :D ]

    I didn’t excpect to get an update in a week or two, but this really made my day (although I know we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the build). Just one question. Earlier you said you’d remove the tunneling effect. Now that looks good, but have you managed to improve the AI accordingly? I know it’s a hard process, but if the AI still walks on top of the brain, this build will most likely make the computer even more handicapped. :/ . well, I’m sure you’ve thought of that too, and I’d also guess that you’ve got some kind of solution for it, but a little more info would be nice.

    AI functions
    No more tunnels
    New weapons(maybe)
    New maps(Shown)
    Rocket Gibs
    Map editor(maybe)
    Turrets(Maybe)

    SFDP, but I looked at that pic again, and I wonder one thing: On the MOIDs screen there’s an object above the blunderbuss to the left that looks a little like a skeleton with an AK (or whatever, I don’t know). However, I can’t see anything on either the color or material screen. Does anybody know what that is, or why it’s there?

    Ok Block, that sound logical. Also some of the other clones have different positions aswell, so I guess you’re right.

    And Robburdon, they aren’t random meters. First, you have the gold value, then you’ve got the Milliseconds/frame, then frames/second. I don’t know what real time simulation cap exactly determines but it’s not just a random number, and it’s very important when [programming, modding, editing, wtvr] to know about how many particles and Moids (no, I don’t know what it means) that the computer will have to process.

    Uhhh… No we wont be able to see our fps… Thats debug mode or whatever… Cause leik…. Data is making it… So he needs to see that stuff

    But that “Particles” meter thing is very usefull for people who want to prevent lag, it helps, so you know when you reach the limit and when to stop blasting stuff

    Any way to activate that in the current build?

    @MAXIMDUDE: You can look at the difrent layers in the curent build by pressing the “M” key(but it dosent show the FPS and stuff)

    I “think” that MOID means MO IDs

    also you may notice that when an actor dies that you can still see his body in-game but if you switch to the “Material” layer the body (and anything else that is static like destroyed ships, guns and piles of broken zombie bones)is shown as its material density

    Wow, I didn’t notice that before. This will be another one of those “revolutionary” builds. Like pretty much every other build so far. Now that it’s an awesome shooter, it’ll also be a strategy!

    I just really hope that we’ll be able to modify the AI sometime in the future.

    I appreciate the effort Data, but you are being quite the sloth in the release of this next build. It need be said also that it is imperative you edify the map transitions to the player. I don’t think its wise to simply jump into a level without a gradual fade-in effect. If you go without a fade-in you will likely cause a disturbance and a shock when all the sudden a user is struck with a motional scene that may cause minor shock among the faint of heart. Thanks for your time and effort, but I think you should stop being the sloth that you are…

    Wait about when you have things where a couple pixel are floating in the air? Will you be able to glitch through that? It’d be kinda lame to be stopped by a couple pixels. Also, when things crash hard, is the effect less than before?

It doesn’t need a story or anything, but objectives do make the game have more purpose than defending as long as you can. Another thing that’d be fricken sweet is if there was a kill count for every player. There have been plenty of times when me and my friends are trying to figure out who’s killed to the most.

    BTW, when I first looked at the picture i wondered why there is a green clone in MOIDs that I don’t see there in Color. Soon after that I notice that there is green clone, but it has moved since the Color screenshot. I clever :D!
    Well anyways then I looked at the clone that is right above brains, and noticed that it is trying to “dance” to the brains, but it seems that because the new physics it can’t dig trough the concrete.

    There’s No Way he gives us a release date again. It’s almost impossible to make deadlines for games, since so much can go wrong with computer games. An estimated week would be nice, but a date’s just not possible to give (or at least not a good idea).

    I’ve seen some people talking about survival maps. Yes they would be awesome. We already have one of sorts; play the grasslands map as green. You get a lot of earth between the dancing skelintons and your brain.

    Shalafi: that is starcraft ghost. I have been wating for it for 3 years now, and each of the 7 release dates have been postponed. The latest I remember it comming out is oct of last year. But that never happened.

    Btw, the game is basically halo + starcraft + badass nukes. Fun

    Data, keep working on the new build, make sure all the bugs are out before you release it, we can wait.

    A key point of the AI is going to be actually being able to intelligently navigate through a building, maybe even one which has been built mid-game. When might we see that?

    1. Don’t be jerks. It’s Data’s project and will remain his. His personal life will also remain his, should we allow him to have one. Have a heart.
    2. For any major improvements to occur, we must be ready to endure long periods of suffering in which we only have the current build’s mods to keep us busy. Smaller things can be added more easily, but large structural improvements such as those data has been implementing in this next build take time to work out, especially when you have a significant other that deserves your time as well.

    No, no, no. You won’t be thrown out to space, and the proof I have is taken from the very game this website is based around. “Gravity” as we know it is just the result of two bodies interacting with each other through some kind of [whtvr, don't know the english terms for those things]. So therefore, logicaly, a body with positive mass affected by a negative field of gravity would react in the same way as a body with negative mass in a positive gravity-field. Now as we all know, Cortex Command is the most realistic physic simulation ever made by man, in fact it’s so good that it excells reality. So if we are to make any conclusions around here, they better be testable in the game. And now, what happens if a bullets is set to a negative mass value? That’s right, it’ll go through anything until it’s lifetime ends. So what can we learn by this? Actually, it’s quite simple:

    If the gravity in Canada is lowered to a negative value, all people there will sink through the earth at the speed of light for 1500 Plankseconds, after which they’ll akk vanish.

    Don’t worry about the current community dying. There will always be others who will find the game thrilling after getting bored of their community, and the faithful fans will always be here. I myself, as there hasn’t been a big build for a little while, have been quite inactive at the forum. That’s fine though. As soon as there is a big build, if I have anything to contribute, I’ll come right back.

    Of course, I’m a more casual fan, a fan over the long term. I spend much of my time doing other things, but CC never fully leaves my thoughts.

For the moment I don’t play Build13 very frequently (glad I’m not the only one waiting for spore too) and you could almost say that I’ve “left” the game, since the only fun thing for the moment is messing around with my friends. However, I’ll certainly come back when the next build is out, and I’ll be sure to send it to everyone that may be interested.

    Well, I’m betting CC will die before the human race dies. After all, we may be able to move into space and data can get lost. (The english word data, not Data.) I think over the time it takes for us to become a spacefaring multi-world race all remnants of CC’s code will be lost. Of course, its possible Data will become a famous game maker in which case his early games could have significant value.

    Still, it’s not gonna die any time soon. I’ll probably have a copy on a disk ’til the day I die.

    Right at it 3xploited! :P I actually laughed at that message, even though only for a short time. And to be honest I think people post stuff about CC dying because there’s nothing better to post. It seems a lot of people (myself included) pos a response in here as long as there’s something to respond too. And since there aren’t any news about CC worthy of getting a response (no pun intended) it’s not a mystery if the posts seems a tad offtopic. But honestly I don’t think that really matters. When there are major news about CC, data always creates a new topic, so there will always be on-topic posts at the top.

    Oh, and I’d so love to see a Cortex Command for sale in stores! Just the sight would be worth paying for. And if people are worried about not having credit cards, ask your parents. When I want to make some pay-download, I give them the money it costs and they buy it for me. So unless you have paranoid or pacifistic parents, I’m sure you could work it out somehow. Also remember that it probably will take some time for the final version will be out (whoever suggested to make build 14 the final version can’t really be that fond to the game).

    sweet, cannot wait data, I just cant! I was thinking though that you could make the enemies vary? Such as on easy mode a small number of skeles and clones come. Medium is the same but with more of each. Hard is no skeles and loads of clones with a few robots and death is tonnes of everything. Just a suggestion… thanks for the update, liking the new map

    Yeah the only real thing I never liked about CC was tunneling. It was fun to watch, but to actually play I had to make my brains invincible. For anybody that wants to do that for now,
    go into Data Realms\Cortex Command\Base.rte\Actors\Brains\
    Then open the config file and change
    GetsHitByMOs = 1
    to
    GetsHitByMOs = 0

    Not sure if you guys know how to do this already, just thought I would post a little reminder if you dont like tunneling. They just make a massive pit!!!

    No, it wont make it stronger and it will make the game crash
    When you set it to 0 its like “Flase” so it will be:
    GetsHitByMOS = Flase, thus it will be not be hit by anything, not even by a nuke or a map wipe
    When you set it to 1 its like “True” so it will be:
    GetsHitByMOS = True, thus it will be hit by everything there is, like: Bullets, actors, rockets, fragments, etc.
    So when you set it to 0 your brain goes into “God mode” kind of phase… Yeah…
    Understood?

    If you want to make your brain stronger, simply go into the same file, and change [Health = 100] into something like [health = 1337]. You’ll also want to change GibWoundLimit into something higher, since that value determines how many hits a MOID can take before it instadies.

    You have to change the Wound Limit, because it is 10, and if it gets 10 shots then it dies.

    Yeah just make the health really high, but still be aware that the brain can still gib, so I reckon that if you did put it to 1337, it would smash at around 500 damage (random guess). I don’t think you can make it stronger any other way.

    If you don’t change the GibWoundLimit, it’ll die after approx 90 points of damage. Myself I have both GibWoundLimit and GibImpulseLimit (they’re the last values of the Actor, or any other objects too for that matter, so just scroll down to the bottom) set to negative numbers, which will prevent the brain from being killed due to gibs. Also I’ve changed the entrywound to create a huge amount of hardened liquid, almost acting like a shield for the brain, but that’s another story.

    I wonder if the new AI settings will help keep all of the AI bots from TRYING to dig to the brain. Besides digging, somethng else that bugged me was how they didn’t put up a fight when they were, because their guns were pointing at the ground. Also, I can’t wait to see how the AI handles its own digging (with the digger). I want to see of the bots can do a better job than we can.

    I’m prepared to wait. I can go around and play other games while I wait for CC. All I have to do is anxiously check the devlog every few days, but I don’t have to stop eating and stare at the devlog all day while complaining that “the community’s going to die”.

    Data, don’t try to cram everything into one build, that is exactly why nearly every sequel to a Half-Life mod is failing, all the developers care about is cramming everything into the initial release. (Take Sven-Coop 2 for an example)

    Hey folks, cool it. His pesonal life is his business. If he wanted you all trying to pry into it he wouldn’t be running a videogame blog. His business with his wife is his own business.

    I’m just as anxious as the rest of you but if all you can do is sit around and wait for the new build and complain that it’s not out, you need to get some more hobbies. ;)

    Also, you must realize that the physics are at the core of the game. He’s probably having to fix things so they work right with the new physics. Considering how long getting this far has taken, going through all that code to isolate bugs is probably quite a job.

    I just realized exactly how hard it is to imagine cortex command without skeletons digging… We’ve gotten so used to it. I wonder if the improved physics will keep rockets from being able to crash through stuff as well? I hope the effect isn’t too dramatic, because that is one of the funnest things to do in the game…

    It’s sure going to feel different… I wonder if there’s any work on the stage editor yet?
