Download Test Build 16!As Linus Torvalds used to say:

“Release early. Release often. And listen to your customers.”

Yes, B15 may have been a little rushed out the door. But we listened to the issues, and here is the fix to most many of them (plus more):

  • No more crashes due to corrupt collision map Nope, still have these.. were introduced with the new optimizations.. sorry. Will work on them.
  • No more crashes due to out of bounds of the scene (digging off the bottom etc)
  • No more crashes due to unknown materials… defaults gracefully to a safe material instead
  • Far more optimized version which runs much faster. We profiled the code and nailed a few hotspots which were slowing down things, especially on larger maps. This is what took a bit longer to do than the other fixes.
  • Mouse jerkyness completely fixed.. silly bug
  • Mouse interface improved.. no more tedious double clicking!
  • Many more small fixes and improvements

Enjoy!

    : 3

    Finally. Data, my hero.
I wonder if the blue clone still crashes the game when sticked in the bottom of the scene…

  4. Blob - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:01 am

Oh YEAH!! YEAH!! This is awesome. Optimized… Fixed many wierd bugs.. Thank YOU!!!

  11. numgun - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:12 am

Btw, does the AddChildObject now work?
And can we control gibbed actors?

  12. SP2 - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:15 am

OMG, Love the “Lost control of remote body” or such.

  13. Steely Ann - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:17 am

Spiffy. Now my comp doesn’t lag like molasses on Enemy Hordes. Weee!

  14. KarvaBopi - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:33 am

    YAY :D

  15. Data - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:45 am

Oops reuploading, accidentally deleted the installer. Try again if your download fails.. sorry

  16. Kurrus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:53 am

I must have got a different installer. The mouse control is fine, but the game still crashes after 5 minutes of gameplay, and I get the same lag whatsoever.

  17. Kurrus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:55 am

Also I installed it alone, not over B15.

  18. AlphaCommando - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:57 am

There seems to be a problem with the download now.

  19. TheGuylol - # August 3rd, 2007 at 9:59 am

Yeh im getting crashes too! D: disappiontment

  20. Axxel - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:17 am

It crashed when I blew up a dropship with a flak cannon :(

  21. Kurrus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:18 am

This is ridicolous, barely 15 seconds playing and it crashes. This is not Build 16. This is Build 15.

  22. Codex - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:19 am

Awesome, b15 was totally unplayable for me because of so many crashes.

  23. Data - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:24 am

Aw… still getting crashes?! Trust me, I’m disappointed too. It was running fine here all morning, no crashes at all… Sorry guys. Will work more and leave it running on all the computers here with the debuggers on them.

Please try to figure out the exact circumstances where the crashes tend to happen, and describe here. Much appreciated.

  24. ChJees - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:26 am

I have nearly no issues with B16, maybe i get a crash after 30 mins. Nothing more serious than that.

  25. TheGuylol - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:36 am

Yeh it takes a while (not as serious as Kurrus’)

  26. TheGuylol - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:38 am

    Oh i just realised!
Garry’s mod 10 got a big ass update and CC got a new build, to day rocks!!! im putting it in my calender!!

  27. SP2 - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:40 am

Data, I’ve figured out that if you install Cortex Command to a different folder then the one specified in the Installer then you tend to get a lot more crashes then usual. Kurrus had the problem so I told him to rename his Cortex Command folder (Which was called “Cortex Command B16″) to just “Cortex Command” and he says it is working like a charm.

  28. Kokits - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:43 am

I just played a short little game and it worked like a charm. Now I’ll test it out on death mode.

Good work with the new build data!

  29. Kurrus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:48 am

It works awesome now! Thanks SP2. Also the lag decreased a lot.

  30. robolee - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:50 am

    # Mouse jerkyness completely fixed.. silly bug
    # Mouse interface improved.. no more tedious double clicking!
woohoo- thanks for including something I pointed out! (checked for tedious, mouse, click in previous log and I’m the only one to mention)

  31. Kurrus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:50 am

Feck, I just got a crash. I’ve been playing for 30 minutes though, so it’s quite an improvement.

  32. Kokits - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:57 am

Hmm… I just found a bug, but I don’t know if this is only with my comp.

I played it when I first DLed it, and I put it in fullscreen. I played fine and then I shut it off to do something else. When I came back and started a new game, it wouldn’t start up. It just gave me the “Do you want to report to Microsoft” window. I went into settings.ini and turned off Fullscreen. I was able to open CC and turn it on to Fullscreen from their.

So it only crashes when I start up CC in fullscreen. It’s easy for me to get around that, it’s just annoying to go windowed every time I’m done with CC.

Does anyone else have this bug?

And does anyone have any idea what’s wrong?

  33. Zero - # August 3rd, 2007 at 10:59 am

Eh. It’s improvement, I don’t mind at all that it still crashes (not as much as 15). If only ALL Dev Teams released builds this fast. =)

  34. numgun - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:01 am

Crashed, but not as soon. Got to play like 10-15 mins before crash. On death.

  35. Grif - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:02 am

    @Kokits:
I changed the settings.ini variable to Fullscreen = 1, double clicked the .exe, and booted CC fine.

    @SP2:
I have CC installing in My Documents/Cortex Command, and didn’t even get unknown errors with B15.

  36. TheGuylol - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:08 am

I get really bad lagg spikes sometimes…so bad i cant move…crashes every 20-40 mins

  37. JeCa - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:30 am

Whoohoo! After my one week holiday, the first thing that happens when I get home is that my Internet melts away (seriously). Then it takes 96 hours more to fix it than the company said. And when I get back, I get this! :D Only sad thing is that the level I’ve been working on for a week now is useless, if you can easily build a base in two minutes. :/ Last build (14) crashed ridiculously often for me though, and I’ll gonna try to find out what the problems are in this build. :)

  38. Neko - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:32 am

Well.. it takes alot longer to crash, but it still happen.

    Cant say how or why..

  39. carpet_ninja - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:33 am

ALL HAIL DATA!!! KING OF THE INTERNETY SPAGHETY!!

  40. Foogooman - # August 3rd, 2007 at 11:43 am

Yeah, I’ve gotten a glitch since build 14 that when an actor dies, the game will crash. It doesn’t happen every time an actor dies, but after 20 minutes of playing it will happen when an actor dies.

  41. Mouseman - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:00 pm

Hmm, I would like to ask: Can anyone ACTUALLY use the mouse+keyboard aiming system? I mean, it’s horribly clunky, and when you can’t aim through ground, you can’t shoot through ground either, it makes digging a pain and just makes the game otherwise utterly unplayable.
The classic keyboard control works great, and the Xbox360 controller mode is just fabulous, but the mouse mode is horribly retarded, am I missing some fine detail of the mouse aiming system, or is it true that it just sucks?

  42. coilgunner - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:14 pm

sweet! looks really awesome….well now i can play with my friends against the computers and it wont crash.

  43. Oblivion - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:21 pm

I have never had a crash on B15 or B16.

  44. willyoustopmeh? - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:23 pm

yup, same as KURRUS, still crashes for me ;/ but it’s not as laggy as buil 15, on horiz land (with little base)i got frame show… now with base like apocalypse towers it’s running good (still about 15-20 fps but i can play now)

  45. JeCa - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:27 pm

Hmm, it crashed after three mins on my first map… :( Can’t say really what happened, since a lot of things were going on at the moment, but it was one of those times the screen turns pink (the [nothing] color) for a few sec before it just closes without giving you any error messages. Hopefully it won’t keep doing it.

  46. penorsegawd - # August 3rd, 2007 at 12:48 pm

data.. you’re amazing. those crashes were very annoying..

  47. Canttouchtheground - # August 3rd, 2007 at 1:13 pm

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY! DATA I WANT YOUR BABIESSSSS

lol jk, great job thanks for looking after these issues so fast.

  48. iwillcontrolyou - # August 3rd, 2007 at 1:18 pm

This is win. Data is win.

  49. Wolfie - # August 3rd, 2007 at 1:23 pm

Still get that funky epilepsy colour glitch.

    and LOTS of crashes.

Build 14 is still most stable for me.

  50. dc443 - # August 3rd, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Nice job Data, but one thing has been bothering me.

Could you add options to change the game’s resolution? I dont like to change it in the setting files every time I install it. 800×600 (or whatever tiny resolution it is) is awfully small.

  51. Lord Tim - # August 3rd, 2007 at 1:41 pm

No more crashes due to out of bounds of the scene (digging off the bottom etc) is definitely my favorite. This is awesome.

  52. The Pope Man - # August 3rd, 2007 at 2:00 pm

I had it crash when I tried to go fullscreen from the options menu.

  53. Kazuki - # August 3rd, 2007 at 2:20 pm

    Awesome. Really nice work.

Also, is it possible to add a “rotate” function in the base building thing?

  54. Darksinner - # August 3rd, 2007 at 2:40 pm

wow that’s fast i came to dowload build 15 cause now im home but 16 is already out YAY!!!

  55. Neko - # August 3rd, 2007 at 3:11 pm

Played a couple of matches now, with no crashes. whee~
I suspect it being something wrong with the dropships. cause the matches where I do crash the game is when I get abit trigger happy with the flak cannon, shooting down dropships.

  56. Koniferus - # August 3rd, 2007 at 3:31 pm

DATA: I’ve played with 15 compared to 16. 16 has almost no crashes! I’ve noticed that the only time my game crashes is when a flak cannon shoots a drop ship. I think it might have something to do with the projectile going through the ship before it explodes. hope that helps :)

  57. nckomodo - # August 3rd, 2007 at 3:35 pm

unable to set any graphic mode
    unsupported color depth

Any ideas what might be causing that?

  58. beorn080 - # August 3rd, 2007 at 3:49 pm

What I’ve noticed is that when you shoot any TDexplosive at a ship the ship simply loads it into itself. That may be whats causing the dropship crashes because the flak cannon round isn’t buyable i think.

  59. Neko - # August 3rd, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Heres just something odd I seen happen about 2 or 3 times.
The engine explodie just kinda freeze in air and stays there.

  60. AquaGeneral - # August 3rd, 2007 at 4:13 pm

There is also some improved slow mo.

  61. Pyrorex - # August 3rd, 2007 at 4:13 pm

DATA! FUCKING LOVE! TODAY IS ME BURFDAY! I got b16 for me burthday, wootzors!

  62. Zcool31 - # August 3rd, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Hello I downloaded this build, and unlike last two it works like charm. However after i exit game and start it again, it runs but all the colors are wrong. I see tons of bright yellows and cyans where there should be blacks and browns. WTF? Besides that, this build is eggselent.

  63. zalo - # August 3rd, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Go into the Task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and head to the processes tab, close all the cortex command.exes.

Or you could restart your computer.

  64. Prod - # August 3rd, 2007 at 6:30 pm

Thank you so damn much, Data.

  65. superdigg - # August 4th, 2007 at 12:55 am

very nice! works much better than the last one. Data, I was thinking, if it isn’t too much trouble, do you think you could add a Kill Counter into the next build? I know it’s not a major thing, but I think it could be a quick, easy way to make battles against the Computer more fun. see how long you can last, and all that.

  66. Grif - # August 4th, 2007 at 2:26 am

“Heres just something odd I seen happen about 2 or 3 times.
The engine explodie just kinda freeze in air and stays there.”

That’s happened since many builds before this one.

Basically, the engine gibs explode, but, hit some amount of resistance that goes over their “RestThreshold”, so, they freeze in midair, rather than go away like they should.

Even Air is a material, and as such has a tiny amount of resistance to particles.

  67. volt - # August 4th, 2007 at 3:24 am

hmmm, seemed to crash with me after about 15 mins of playing when a was flying a ship and i crashed into another ship, then mine started barrel rolling. That’s when it crashed.

  68. MONKY - # August 4th, 2007 at 3:37 am

I agree with superdigg, a kill counter would be very nice

  69. JeCa - # August 4th, 2007 at 3:48 am

Nice idea Superdigg, although most of the comps casualties are due to accidents. :P . About the crashes, I have to agree with Koniferus. The first three matches crashed in the first five minutes, and all happened when I had at least one flak cannon on a high point. Also, if you play Prom Grounds, the computer no longer avoids to deploy at your base. Works well on custom-made levels though. :)

  70. christopher - # August 4th, 2007 at 6:09 am

    WOW…cool…Quick too!

  71. JeCa - # August 4th, 2007 at 8:33 am

Alright, I’ve had time to play the game some more, and I have to congratulate you (Data) to the awesome game you’ve built. The editor works great, and the only problem I have with it is that you can brake robots by moving them fast before placing them or dropping equipment on them. Really hope weapons placed upon an actor will stick in the actors inventory in later versions. The game doesn’t crash nearly as often as before when I don’t use cannons, but I’ve had two crashes some 30 mins into the game, both occurring when something heavy (rocket in one case) was propelled into a dropship. Except that, the game performs excellent with greatly decreased lagg compared to the old builds.

Keep up the good work! :D

  72. z - # August 8th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

Don’t quote Linus without a Linux version!!
