Pathfinding through the materials

Yep, and it’s dynamic so when new tunnels are created and old ones get clogged with corpses, the AI will always know the path of least resistance to their targets - even if it means digging through lots of material!

This will change the necessity to heap tons of stupid AI guys on you like we used to do in the test builds. Now only a handful of smarty enemies should make a much more fun challenge than before.

It also means your own AI-controlled bodies can be commanded more specifically and be able to carry out much more complex tasks. Don’t want to bother digging that tunnel yourself? Just send one of your drones to do it for you, and he’ll expertly avoid rocks and other subterranean obstacles on the way.

    Awesome! I guess the AI digging will be a lot better from now on too, then, eh? I’d so long to have this, but I’m still a bit confused after the last update.

    Will the next update be commercial, and will there be multiple commercial builds? If so, then will there be any more free builds including AI pathfinding, /better/ (not full) editor? Or will the game be a free download with locked content?

    I’ll probably buy the game anyway, but these things would be nice to get a bit more info about first.

    what will happen if you put a wall in front of an underground brain bunker entrance? dig in from the top of the bunker through the concrete.

    what happens if it loses its digger?, will it know to move out the way to let ones that do have a digger infiltrate?

    Does the AI take enemy positions into account?
    like say, i made a LONG tunnel leading to an open brain, and a shorter one that’s pinned down by one of my guys. Would it take the long or short path?

    I have but one question, similar to many others asked here. Will the AI effectively use their jetpacks to, say, get over obstructing walls instead of digging through them? Will they jetpack up to the entrance of a tower?

    It was mentioned previously, though unfriendly. I must ask if the CC engine will be upgraded to load and run the game faster?

    thats why it will be smart and allow BOTH if the processor handles data and the the GRAPHICS card handles GRAPHICS it will run loads better, as any graphics card can run most 2d games seamlessly and they’re handling data as well

    Why does the line go like that, ot almost suggests a hexagonal/octagonal grid across the map that the AI uses to plot paths, or maybe you drew that line yourself? Just the first thing I wondered seeing the image.

    Alenth: The line is drawn in debug mode to enable me to see the paths. The pathfinding is done on a 20px square grid overlayed on the scene, but the paths it spits out gets processed further afterward, hence the irregular looking line you see in the image.

    Damn, I was thinking that it might work by having a fourth layer. Different colors on that layer change AI behavior, but that means you’d need a different tunnel for right and left…

    Thank you! (not for the compliment, which obviously not for me XD, but for being understanding towards the devs) I hate how spoiled punks keep saying that CC shouldn’t go commercial. I wish we had a 6-7 year project we could start them on and expect them to quit their jobs and work on it for no reward, since that is EXACTLY what they are asking of Data, even if they don’t realize it. Ugh…

    Anyway, on topic;
    I think that pathing is CC’s second (since the idea of digging for gold) decisive step towards the pseudo-RTS-ish aspect that Data mentioned he wanted CC to have. Assuming that hasn’t changed, I think we can expect more exciting additions like this in the future, as the game gets closer and closer to completion. With smarter but less numerous enemies, some of the strategy aspect will arise naturally (building your base will now require more strategy than just putting a wall between the AI and your brain).

    My question is, how far is this going to go in the strategy direction? In the future will it be possible to select multiple bodies and send them towards an enemy brain in a single, large, AI controlled wave? I personally think that would be awesome.

    Also, will pathfinding eventually take enemies into account, or is that going to be left just to line of site?

    Will the bots eventually be able to avoid trying to climb on/over one another, dismembering their teammates? I know that it’s been reduced, but if they could avoid climbing on each other altogether it would all but eliminate the problem.

    I have to be 100% honest; after what was at least a month of CC obsession, I got tired of the test builds. They were (are) for the most part just sandboxes for mods that hinted at the game they are now being turned into. Eventually I ran out of satisfying things to do. Please note, however, that that’s just part of my personality; I’m the type that finds something that interests me and obsesses over it for a few months, learning as much as I can about it, and then move on, returning occasionally. My current interest is Dwarf Fortress, for those who’ve heard of it.

    Yeah, I realised after posting it that it must be a square grid(which makes more sense anyways), but the angles it chose to use strick me as so odd in places I was confused.

    I guess that’s what you get with complex sorting algorythms, I respect the fact that you got it to even draw that line, far more than I could ever have done.

    Of course, my first mission will be to try and confuse the pathfinder to see what it takes to do so.

    I assume actors will use diggers, but will they resort to digging with SMGs? Perhaps at a certain point where they no longer have the equipment to dig, they should go out on a mission to kill the players units, making it a little more difficult to simply take out all the stealthy little enemies from behind.

    Actually, I think there was a donation button at the top of the devlog at one time… Does anyone remember? I think when Data quit his job he was hoping the donation button would help him get a bit of extra money. Maybe he took it down? Was there ever one or am I just confused?

    Holy shit, the new picture scares me. If the new enemies can dig, we are fucked up the balls. It will make th game WAY cooler though. Now you can’t just lock in your brain and go hunting. You actually have to GUARD and stuff. Using defenses and traps pays off. I hope we get land mines, barbed wire and stuff to place, that would be awesome.

    Since this is apparently an AI focused build, I’d like to point out something: Could you make the AI able to use it’s jetpack while flying? I’ve got the enemies to spawn without a dropship, and they’ll jetpack down, but if they see me, they cut the jetpack and start firing. Not good for an enemy who sees me about 30 feet from the ground.

    I think the jetpacks right now are used by the AI to soften falls, which is great because it’s cool being able to “paradrop” guys from a dropship that can’t go too low because of soldiers on the ground.

    Will they use jetpacks to get over things? Hmm … and by easiest path, that doesn’t mean the AI only follows the most open path, does it? So, say I have two tunnels
    One that runs for 200km, with no barricades. Another that’s only 10m, but the entrace is covered with dirt. Would the AI chose the quicker path?

    Will a clone without a jetpack know to take the stairs from a building, or will they just jump out the nearest window to get to the ground with the least resistance?

    Also, will the clones know the power of it’s own digger? A clone with a light digger has to move around the rocks, but one with a heavy digger would be wasting time if they tried to avoid “natural” obstacles in the ground.

    This will win… Imagine this, you are losing a battle and most of your base is trashed, you are taking refuge in the brain vault which is now barracaded with a pile of corpses, and all of the sudden a skeleton walks to it and tunnels through and disables your weapon by shooting it, it then kills you and your main control brain…
    I am going to have to put traps…

    Acid clones in between the obsticles would do, they would explode and disentigrate the skeleton…

    Blob: we’ve made progress on a way to make the game capture and spit out animated gifs directly… just pause, drag a box on the screen or in the scene, unpause and hold down a special key to capture from that box. Each time the capture key is released, a shiny new gif animation gets spit out, showing what happened in the box while the key was held down.

    The jetpacking sounds cool. So far enemies have been easy to stop, just make pits and walls, but the new AI sounds like it will be incredible. Good work.

    I highly doubt that your geographical location would have any bearing on the game itself, seeing as how all you need is a download link and a serial key to play the game. As far as payment, some kind of paypal system will undoubtedly be created as one method of payment.

    Also, I think Data already has what he’s going to do planned, he doesn’t really need you to reiterate in a clumsy, badly formatted manner.

    Text based games can never come close to over a gigabyte. Since everything in this game (a lot of the content anyway) is made with text files, it will never take much space because text takes almost nothing to store.

    It’s not in the game. Making an enemy base is only possible in multiplayer (kind of) where your friend makes a base too.

    maybe, when playing a single player game, the AI should get some sort of default bunker, instead of a brain in the ground. sometimes it’s just nice to invade something.

    also, will the new navigation dynamics be applied to gold digging AI? those are some really nice lookin’ tunnels, they look; perfect for finding and traveling to gold deposits. right now, they just sort of wave the digger around.

    I think that’s the million bucks question.

    This is my first and maybe only comment, so I’ll make it a little bit large.

    I play this game from Argentina, a friend of mine found it on 4chan and gave him the best link I received this year. The game is just great, I play it at home, I play it at work.

    I’m a little bit worried about the charged version because it’s no so easy buying stuff from Internet here and I refuse to crack the game.

    I have only two suggestions for the future of the game. The things to develop for the final version, the important things are performance and AI, everything else is just perfect and the best way to get it better is by the creativity of mods.

    The second suggestion is the ability to play LAN. I don’t expect playing by the Internet, but, just for confort, It would be freaking awesome.

Although I apologize for mentioning another game in CC’s devlog (don’t mob me!), I might try to recreate it as best I can in Spore once it comes out. I think it’s fitting to use an awesome game to pay tribute to another awesome game.

    Naturally, I’m assuming that both games will be awesome in their final forms; and they’d better be… I’m looking at you guys–*Looks pointedly at Data and Will Wright*–and you guys as well, while I’m at it…–*Turns around and looks at Alec Holowka and Derek Yu*.
