Some more split with that screen?

Major progress this week. Now multiple players (1-4) can be on the same team, cooperating against another AI or player-controlled team. You and your teammates can buy stuff and have it delivered wherever you want on the map, and you can order as many times as you want without having to wait for the deliveries to get there - they just queue up!

Four-player game

Imagine playing coop with three of your buddies: one on the mouse+keyb, one on the other side of the keyboard, and the two remaining on USB gamepads (not necessarily xbox 360 controllers)… trying to protect your collective brain from the onslaught of a now very deadly AI who can actually aim straight!

One of you guys may be on the offense, one tending to the defense control, one who is responsible for the gold collection operation, and the fourth as a floater who keeps everyone supplied with new guys and guns.

It’s all in the upcoming build, folks… There’s some tedious menu and other user interface work to be done, but almost everything else under the hood is good to go for a release sometime next week!

    I went back to one of the earlier enteries and noticed it said: “…the humans have traveled to planet [insert name here] for it’s high resorce of gold…” (or something like that) at the insert name part i realised that the planet has not been named yet or i’ve missed it. Have you come up with anything?

    Wow, this looks great!
    Hmm…
    About the interfaces.
    I’m planning on working on something involving them soon.
    Will it still use the same GUI bmp file, or will there be more types of menus?
    Also, there’s a green divider line between every buyable object, and it can’t be changed, if it would be possible to implement that into the next build, that would be great.

    Just as a question, are the gamepad controls completely customizable? I have a joystick, and could use the ‘hat’ as the four directions, if it’s custom.

    Anyway, great job! New AI, co-op, drop-points… Oh My!

    Just add a ‘disable blood’ option and it’s going on my website!

    On my website, I try to only add games that would have around a Teen rating. I dunno, but Cortex Command can get REALLY bloody, even without mods.

    However, I would agree that it’s fine by me. Just not for my site.

    You can switch to any actor on your team that isn’t currently being controlled by someone else, except for the brain (buy menu), which everyone can control at the same time, and get their own menus which will remember their own settings.

    So yes, you can control stuff that your teammates have ordered, as long as they’re not currently controlling them themselves.

    No offense Metroid, but (in my opinion) the teen rating is retarded. Teenagers swear MORE than adults, and since when did red pixels on the screen make kids go crazy because they aren’t ready for that?

    Anyway, thats my rant.

    Seriously though, can you set it so you don’t have to use the mouse and keyboard? Can I use the two old keyboard settings, and two gamepads? If I do a 2v2 or anything, I dont want the 1 guy with the mouse to pwnzor everyone else.

    Oh yeah, and holy shit I can’t believe that a new cortex command is adding new ai, coop, new order features and 4 players holy crap I’m not going to sleep when it comes out. Or eat. Or any other action besides get carpal tunnel.

    I’m thinking the same thing, Lawl. But I guess if parents don’t want their kids exposed to violence, maybe a disable blood option should be added, though I’m not sure how you’d tell if you were dying from after getting shot.

    Actually, I think the blood in this game is integral to the gameplay, when you get shot you can tell by the hole, when you lose a limb that big bloody spot makes it clear to you. When you’re bleeding, you lose health. I think that in this case a remove blood and gibs option would be like a remove guns option, what’s the point?

    Then again, I never did like that whole rating system. Shielding your children is a touchy subject, go too far and they’ll rebel against you, and possibly have trouble in the real world. Go too little, and they may be scarred for life. Oh well, this ain’t the place for philosophical discussions.

    I am thoroughly infatuated with this game. (infatuated (adj): Possessed by an unreasoning passion or attraction.) I can’t wait! Good going guys!

    I think it’s a bad idea to be okay with your offspring playing a game where people get shot in the head as long as they don’t BLEED. A little bit weird as far as priorities go. But it’s common! Same for the institution of swear words. The fear-of-children-seeing-fake-blood thing is pretty much a 20th century invention…and actually people have become much more tense about swear words in the last century or so, too. I say that it’s our animal instinct to look for the superficial — which can be seen at first glance — to give us a good guess as to more relevant things. And so these parents, full of good intentions and poor self-reflection, try to make a child be kind by making him not use impolite language, politeness being a superficial trait that is associated with kindness. Violence is the same way. If you put yourself in the place of your parent — it helps to have a much younger sibling — it feels very bad to think that your kid is spending a great deal of time having fun by digitally shooting people. However, the fact that a person plays a game where the goal is a violent one in no way means that they are entertained by the observation of or participation in real-life violence. All dramatic entertainment — movies and books and games, too — are founded on conflict, which is for quite obvious reasons the coolest thing in the world. And (especially, I expect, for males who are, whether by cultural or chemical conditioning, geared very much towards the physical) what is a more pure conflict than violence? Any animal’s survival instincts (including our own) rely on reacting to, avoiding and/or utilizing violence. However, as fairly empathic beasts, the vast majority of us will not willingly cause corporeal harm to another human being without being given a nice little incentive for doing so. It is precisely because we know that this is not real and that we would not really do this that we find digital violence so engaging.

    Aw, hell, think what you want, I guess. Far be it from me to make you scroll down this far without at least losing confidence at the end. I’m just a 15-year-old who likes to type a very great deal.

    OH and again, you are incredible for maintaining a project this great for free for, what, three, four years now? The internet reeks of death — long-abandoned websites with good ideas and better web design but founded more on the enthusiasm of the moment than realistic goals. There are few mediocre, even fairly shitty games that have been updated as vigilantly as this amazing one has.
    That kind of sounded like I was calling Cortex Command shitty/mediocre but I WASN’T! This game is better as it is than the majority of full retail games I’ve bought. AND IT’S STILL ALIVE, DAMMIT!

    Well said 21GP.

    Cortex Command is one of my top 5 favorite games EVER. I have played half life 1 and 2 (the second is another of the top ones), IL2 Sturmovik, Doom 3, Quake (like a bunch of them) Command and Conquer (all the ones from red alert 2 and recenter) and a bunch more that I’m way too lazy to remember. Its my favorite free game for sure, and at least in my top 5 games ever.

    Keep up the good work DATA, I can’t wait for the next release. I actually cant… *twitch*

    I know that ratings is a touchy subject, but I do think a blood option would be good. My dad loves video games and is always interested in what I play. I’ve never been able to show him Toribash because I know he’ll flip about all the blood. I also can’t play a lot of online games because I know that if my parents walk by, then they will make me stop playing it.

    My dad won’t let me buy Crackdown because of the rating. He let’s me buy other rated M games, but Crackdown is rated M for the same reasons as GTA 3.

    If more games featured options that let you turn off blood, language, and that sort of stuff, then kids with stricter parents can still play a larger variety of games.

    If only I could play Gears of War…

    I don’t think a no-blood option in CC would really work. What about limbs and stuff, that fall off when you get shot? Not to mention all the violent sound effects. It might sound a bit rough, but violence is an important part of CC’s gameplay. Besides, half the fun is just seeing those bastards being torn to shreds when you shoot them in the face with an AK-47, hehehe >=D

    But really, my parents are cool. They let me do whatever I want, they allow me to play what games I want as long as I don’t disobey them. And my point was, that if someone has stricter parents, then these type of features would help them.

    But on a more somber note, are you planning on adding more features to CC, like better low velocity physics and doors and stuff? I remember you talking about that before, and it would REALLY kick the gameplay up a notch if we could stand on rockets and people couldn’t walk through the ground…

    Thrustrust: Yeah we definitely have plans to revise the collision response logic, and also add doors, which will actually be a corollary to that.
    You should be able to get slowly crushed under a closing hatch, for example the current physics can’t do it properly. It’s going to happen.

    Would be good with doors that you could kick them broke that nothing can open em and they must be destroyed to go in/out, like bending em or something

    and how the doors would work? do they regonize the type, like red teammate and green teammate? and open for red, close for green

    could Door hacking be possible :)

    I eagerly await this next build and anything else made by Data. He has proved himself quite the developer, and those same praises should be extended to his teammates.

    Deadlines are bad, too much anxiety for the developer. I usually assume that any deadline will be missed by anywhere from a day to a week. After all, you want it to be the best, don’t you?

    The resolution can be changed in the config files. But Data, you should make it more user-friendly by extending the background texture so it doesn’t look as unfinished if I set a higher resolution, and adding a setting in the game options. Aside from that, the game works perfectly fine. also sometimes it ghosts when there’s no background texture there.

    Who knows, maybe you can do a custom background texture which is bigger so that this is not a problem. Still, it should be included. :)

    BTW Awesome game, Data, like nothing i’ve ever seen before. Keep up the most excellent work. Must… have…. mouse… aim…………

    sorry 4 double post. btw to stop people walking into the ground, i put the grass strength higher than metal. it stops skelitons screwing up the ground. if u use a map with little grass, put the dirt strength up. not too much tho. it will stop mining if u do.

    You guys are too specific with the times. When he said sometime next week he probably meant if you follow this week to the end, that week after that is a GENERAL timeframe of the release.

    I always assume they’ll miss the deadline, and that any general ideas of a release are only if EVERYTHING goes perfect. I would consider the timeframe to be anything from six days ago to seven days from now in the future.

    From that mini-video of the shield, it looks like the mouse cursor is the triple-red-pixel aimer thing. I’m not a big fan of that thingy though, its WAY too hard to see. I bet we just use the mouse cursor and there wont be a single problem, but how come those red dots were all jittery and moving in all directions? (closer and farther away from the actor)

    is there going to be a way to control the jetpack direction using the keyboard+mouse?

    When i fiddled with my gamepad (a wired up Xbox1 controller) I noticed that at one point I was able to control the direction of the jetpack and aim independently. it’d be sweet if we could do this in mouse aim mode.

    im just bring this up again.

    not many people seem to realize that the only difference between mature rated and teen rated is language. i have seen games that do close ups of you ribbing th fleshy face off your opponent and the hero stood there with blood all over him as he (this game has AMAZING GRAPHICS) took the neck of the person and started eating it. it was rated teen because no one ever talked. it was all screams yells grunts. and do you know what i find funny. that every gene of every human is ingrained with war. war and the need to reproduce. every last movement of any thing is because of genes.
    its kinda like good and bad. every movement you make is either gonna lead to some one dead. or a new life.

    War is only necessary if two different groups of humans have different views on the same subject.

    Every human has either a conscious or sub-conscious will to be correct in every matter, (even if they may be wrong) so they take their opinion and turn it into anger, which will unadvertedly lead to war.

    Of course, it sometimes has to do with the will to survive, but not as much as it used to.

    Genes do not control our lives. Genes change the structure of the human body and how it grows, which in turn change our brain structure which changes *part* of how we think and everything otherwise.

    People do have free will, but our selections in life are affected by how our brain thinks about them, which are in part because of how are genes made our brain, but mostly because of other influences around us.

    You can’t tell me that genes control us because if they did, media wouldn’t have such a strong effect and we would still be primitive.

    But what do I know, I’m only fourteen.

    ‘An Inconventint truth’ is a God-aweful movie anyway so the only way i’m going to watch the rest of the movie (as opposed to 2 minutes) is if i’m forced to which i probably will by some tree-hugger teacher or professor later on.
    But anyway, I don’t deny climate change, but i agree with kokits in that it’s not all that bad.
    oil finally went down to below $50 a barrel because there was not as much use for it in heaters. i like the planet and it freakin amazing but global warming could be a better thing than it’s made out to be

    The amount of water stored in the ice caps can rise sea levels by something like 50ft or higher if there is a rise by about 4 degrees, and that means almost all of our planet’s coastline will be submerged. What’s more, the amount of fresh water in the icecaps would stop the north Atlantic currents (it relies on a perfect balance of salt-fresh water). This means that the areas around the northern hemisphere would lose their heat, and become somewhat like norway.
