1. Prom’s godliness as a spriter (look at dem gibs on the ground)
2. Crab actors? Wtf, awesome.
3. Turrets.
4. Clones with armor (armor system?)
5. New bunkermodules
6. New terrain debris
7. Another new background
8. Possibly working doors (look on the bottom, large pic, at the roof structure. Moving thing?)

the big orange canister thing is a turret, hence the bullet casings being ejected.

Yeah Mooseral, I thought that as soon as I saw the screens. If you think about it, the Dropship is orange, that robot is orange, and the turret is orange, and all those gibs are orange, and the spider crab is orange.

Just throwing this out there but it looks like Campaign will be pitting fleshy meatbag clones with AKs, Shotguns, and flak cannons against an advanced citrus fruit robot race with machine gun turrets, explosive arachnobots, and crash test dummies programmed to kill.

Faction based games take the cake over others. Also, this (theoretically) means that new factions can be fan made…

The commercial release promises to give a huge boost to the modding communtity’s potential, especially now that Data no longer has to worry about someone making a full game through modding, and can allow deeper customization.

If Data gives a good modding system, allowing creation of things beyond variable edits, I’ll probably play this game for the next decade. Even if not, it is still epic and full of crabs and win.

Also: an elevator means that the actor collisions have been improved. If that is an elevator, epic+=1

1. That turret indeed is 4-legged…
2. That Pic with crab, look at right side. Better rock textures?!
3. That Rooftop3 has warning sign with arrow pointing down, so it’s presumable elevator.

That crab isn’t in map editor. They wouldn’t move if it was map editor, would they?
Look at sand little left from crab. You can see removed bits of terrain, because of that crab IS MOVING!

Congrats on being so close to release. I installed a test build of CC about 3/4 of a year ago on my school’s computers, the underclassmen total more hours on it than I do. I’m personally paying for the commercial version, and the younger students may yet buy themselves copies as well.

The new sprites look godly, especially the new Green Clones, the proportions make them look far more professional and say a lot about your abilities as a spriter.

I’m looking forward to the commercial edition.

Ok, update for slow people:

The next build of CC will cost money. You must purchase a serial key to activate your download of Cortex Command.

There will be multiple methods of paying, so far including paypal, debit and credit cards.

Daa has announced there will be a discount for people who buy the first commercial build that comes out. While the first commercial build may have bugs, you will get the next versions for FREE.

Data has said he will be releasing for both Windows and Macintosh OSes

Data will release a free trial of the final game if for some strange reason you aren’t sure if you want to buy one of the most entertaining games ever made, and definitely the most entertaining independent game ever made.

And finally, yes this game is worth it.

P.S.: If you pirate this game, you are one sick S.O.B. Don’t think of it as paying for the game you want, think of it as rewarding Data for the countless hours of hard work he has put into making a game that will be enjoyed by hundreds of fans.

Oh awesome. I was just reading the IRC log, and data said the big dome walking turret is just a crab carrying a turret on top.

So basically you can give the crab a gun, and the gun in this case is that big dome turret, like a clone carrying an ak.

He said crab CLASS in that post. As in, another class of actor. If you look, the structure of the guncrab is the same as the crabcrab, but diff sprites.

So, clarification, crab class=a new kind of walky actor, not those crabs are the same. I wonder if you could give the crabcrab an AK?

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that’s a special crosshair for crabs to see where they are going to go when they press jump.

That would also calm Skibiliano’s fears about the crab being cornered.
Crosshair can’t be seen in the crab turret screen because it’s cropped too close.

Jumping would be cool. Say, for skeletons and crabs (or clones who dont want to use jetpack) it would be useful for a very fast, but small leap, since you accelerate upwards faster than the jetpack, where you build momentum slowly.

But still, if the crabs has some sort of climb feature. that would be awesome. You could use crabs to climb through rubble and debris to get behind the enemies defenses.

Just an idea.

The crab comes crashing down onto the green clone, its sharp limbs piercing through its skull. Blood spews from the clones head as its arms go limp, its ak falling from its dead hands.

Hey, I actually found out what that sign at the roof/elevator is.

It’s a little sign with a brain “zapping/controlling” a robot, and from what I can see it has an arm stickign out, and the robot is that robot at the bottom right’s head, since it is the same color with that little yellow and black circle thing on it’s side.

How will a torrent of a serial key activated game work?

I have probably bought two games legally in my whole life and pirated the rest. Cortex Command however, I -WILL- buy, so that probably means the rest will definitely buy CC, because frankly we’re way too hungry for it to wait for an illegal serial key to go up. Also, the people who buy the game obviously love it, and wouldn’t want others to steal it, so they wouldn’t put a serial up.

Also, if there was some way to disable serial keys for CC, a few fans could go around the internet beaming up distributed CC keys to Data and have him destroy them.

Plus, if you pirate this game you are a heartless bastard who is taking money from a man who must support a wife and kid, and you will surely burn in Hell for that. It’s not like pirating mass produced games where it has little effect. Every copy sold counts: this is Data’s only form of income right now.

No, my theory is: they attempted to rip me off by charging $40 for oni (which came out in 1999 and now goes for less than a dollar for PC) and I evaded their attempts.

you don’t get it, companies such as ea, get thousands of pounds a year, only a very few of the people who want a game will pirate it, and this is only a problem for reasonable old games, it is however more of a problem for software (seeing as how adobe flash costs $699 I’m not surprised, a lot of other programs are around this price)

Games = software. You mean productivity software. But anyhow, my theory is that since it seems that about 75% of those who use productivity software pirate it, if they dropped their prices, they could probably sell more than they do now, hence making at least slightly more profit.

Such things are hard to predict, though, and since there is a large risk in a significant price drop, it’d probably not be worth it.

There are many old games out there infinitely superior to the generic games of today; there is no harm in pirating these, as all that is done is a possible slight profit drop for the new, generic games that are around now. If a game is awesome and no longer sold, why not pirate it? If a new game that is truly unique/innovative/awesome/enjoyable comes out, I will gladly purchase it (cortex command :D), as this helps support the development of non-suck games, a truly noble cause in my opinion.

Pirating new games is less ethical; this does decrease the profit margins of the big companies, hence having a negative impact on their employees.

Um..metal chao he said he’s working on the armor. There’s no way he’d release armored clones that don’t really have armor for the commercial build. Why would you assume that?

And I don’t think the crash test dummies are just for the tutorial, seeing as how the rooftop has the crash test dummy symbol on it, and there seems to be a large collection of orange colored things (crabs, crabturrets, dropships)

I just tried do something like sniper rifle in CortexCommand. It was bad. It killed klones and skeletones, but from robots and crafts took only 10 - 20 %. But i tried fix it.
In some hours, when all still wrong, i decided to drink tea and than continue. I went here just from interest. And what I saw ?! I cannot do one normal gun, and you….

So it is probably something used in Data’s Debug mode…

He won’t do steam. Steam does not have a mac version, and since Data is definitely porting CC to mac that would be a big loss of money for him.

That, and steam takes some ungodly percentage of how much money you make off of your game.

Not quite…

If it were on steam, it would not be serial activated. Steam’s system would stop pirating, but of course their company also takes a large cut of profits from the games they host. However, there are many indie games on steam, several of which are probably around 10 mb.

You can’t buy the orange box by itself. The one you buy in stores is simply the stuff required to activate on steam, and the files that are usually downloaded. Also, as far as that hacked Orang Box goes, if you didn’t use a hack for steam itself (or an account on it), I’m curious to know how you did it, whilst still keeping multiplayer.

However, though rich, Valve and Steam make excellent games. They are original, polished, and reasonably priced, so why not buy them?

Buying a game and saying “omfg this gaem sukks” and then NOT EVER BUYING A GAME AGAIN strikes me as stupid, seeing as it was only the one studio and producer who made the game. There are a lot of teh suxxor games out there, so look the game up, read some reviews, and try a demo before you get the game. Buying the good games makes the studios that make them do better, hence ending up with more good games (theoretically).

And, on a developmental note:

I look forward to further improvements in CC. My main problems with it right now are A: modding potential is not what it could be and B: not enough restrictions are put on things like where you can put your base, meaning that many games start with dumb things like one player putting guys in the other’s brain room, or building a tunnel to it.

Scripting support would be awesome, too, as well as possibly a more intuive way to change the animations on units. These would allow players to create things that players wanted that were not provided, such as buggies, or huge 8-legged walkers that did not look bad.

But it IS serial activated, and it isn’t going on steam. And I think Data would make more money by not using steam and having a few ungratefuls pirate the game than putting it on steam and giving up a large portion of his money.

As to the developmental issues, considering the fact that the only time someone could put their troops in your brain room is if you’re doing two player, and if your partner does that, you either threaten him with punches to the mouth if he is of equal or lesser strength, or if he is stronger, you either refuse to play with him or press R in mid game.
Basically, you both have to agree to play the game fairly.

And I’m not sure you’re right about modding potential. Fans have already scripted airstrikes and frickin’ homing missiles without the developers help.

To be honest, (go away FBI, nobody wants you here) i only pirate games that I feel aren’t worth 50 bucks. Battlefield 2, since it was shitty and a rip off, I pirated so my cousins, my dad and I could play LAN every once in a while.

Original, worthwhile games I always buy. I feel that supporting creative game developers is essential, since pirating their games will stop them from making more.

Hence; I pirate bad games, but support good ones.
Namely, Cortex Command.

Actually… you can do many things with steam.
You can get programs that can creat a fake account… download games free off steam and also activate them using steam.. all with the press of a few buttons.
Also… ever heard of steam buster??? That can be used to get multiple game sin conjunction with various programs specific to certain games.
Multiplayer works fine on all games if you find the right ways… as i have a few steam games now….

Eh, airstrikes and homing missles are one thing. But fan modding could yield tanks, zeppelins, and quite an odd assortment of guns and actors.

It would be cool to have a gun that fires a ball covered in feet, which then runs at people and blows up.

You know what I mean. The more modding potential a game has, the longer it will last, and the bigger it’s community. Script support would be epic in cortex command; it would also allow players to code things like capture the flag, for an example.

Right now, our mods are basically:
1: Drop shit on people,
2: Make some robot d00d (none of which are now really interesting or original, as all of the currently allowed modding has been explored)
3: Make something that kills things in a spectacular way, or
4: Find/create a really clever ploy to eke somthing like homing missles out of the engine (there are only so many of these.)

Modding potential currently is already pretty well expended. There may be a few more cool things made, but the amount that would be made possible by expanded modding would be epic.

Playing with a noob usually means that they accidentally put their brain room right beside yours, or in it intentionally. Also putting it at the bottom of the map with no access. These are irritating, and could at least be partially amended by build areas.

There really isn’t anything left to say about steam. It isn’t what data is going for, it seems, and it has many downfalls.

The bomb that has feet and runs at people is impossible with current modding. It was also simply an example, which I came up with in a hurry.

Your ideas are crazy. See also: Sparta.

A dogfight gamemode would be fun too. Make actual functional sopwith-style aircraft, and have at it.

Also, a necromancer. Make it capable of summoning zombies, and calling meteors from the sky. Neither of these would work properly with current modding.

Also, a rifle with single shot, burst fire, and automatic firemodes. Or an underslung grenade launcher. We don’t have proper fire modes on weapons right now; even if we don’t get them, with coding they could be added.

Tracers are also currently hardcoded and hard to deal with, if they and the glow they show were more easily manupilated much could be done, or existing stuff could work better.

Go go livestock cannon! Now with true random livestock generation!

It just calls down a meteor sortof in front of you. Modding would allow you to have a trajectory indicator, so you can tell where it will land.

Also spellcasting: put a rune on the ground, and there’s a meteor storm there for a bit. Like WC3’s blizzard spell.

The zombies aren’t controllable though, so I doubt how well they will work. I may be mistaken, however. We shall see.

Yeah meteors are already made. And dogfight mode and spellcasting? WTF?This is Cortex Command..you fight with little men who have GUNS.

So you say we need zombies, which we have, meteors, which we have, dogfights, which we can already do, so there’s no need in making a new game (mode) for it or designing aircraft that would only be plausible for this mode, why would you need a trajectory indicator for an airstrike attack if we’ve already got the careful aiming scope.

Basically the only idea we need/don’t have is burst fire and automatic modes which I’m pretty sure Data has already thought of.

And finally, wtf at the running bomb. I think shooting someone with a bomb would be more plausible than having a bomb with legs whose novelty would wear off after the first use. But still, if that’s what you want, to each his own..

What gave you the idea that I disagreed because you posted? That doesn’t even make any SENSE.

I disagreed because I didn’t like your ideas of expanding the modding potential even more when it already has everything you want. Why? Because I think Data should be spending more time on improving parts of Cortex Command that everybody wants (tweaking weapons to balance them, fixing bugs that show up, improving the AI etc) rather than making Revenge of the Red Baron And World of Cortexcraft.

But if you think that I’m stubborn for the simple reason that I disagree with you, then it’d be better to just stfu and ignore me, though I doubt you could find anyone else to say they like your ideas.

Most of those ideas posted were stupid, yes, as it took me all of five minutes to come up with them.

Have you made any mods? If you have, you will have seen that it is difficult to make anything original. What is original is a workaround, irritating for the mod maker to create and imperfect for the player to use.

If modding was implemented, Data WOULD NOT HAVE TO MAKE EXTRA CONTENT. This is the point. He would only have to work on perfecting the core game. It would save him work as long as it is not too hard to implement (it should not be too hard as we already have limited modding) and it would extend the longevity of the game tenfold.
