Download Test Build 12!… or Bummer, if you had to program and test it all :p

There are many very significant improvements to this version:

  • 1-4 player split screen, co-op against the CPU, or versus each other on two teams!
  • Multiple players on the same team can share the single brain and order what they want, when they want.
    D-Pad

  • Easily configure any damn controller under the sky to work beautifully, including…
  • Dual Analog

  • Mouse + Keyboard support!
  • Sharp aiming support for all control schemes; doesn’t go through walls
  • AI spotting, aiming, and firing logic is vastly improved… your AI guys are now useful guards!
  • Early implementation of ballistic shields. Wielding logic needs a lot more polish though.
  • Select which scene you want to play in! (yes, really)
  • After ordering new equipment, select where it should be delivered on the terrain.
  • No need to wait for the last order to arrive, queue up as many as you want and can afford, and order them to land wherever your strategy needs them!
  • Pause a game and bring up the main menu with [Esc], then resume the same game after changing controls and options!
  • Several more improvements and bug fixes which I can’t remember right now…

You can safely install this version over the last (11), but I can’t guarantee that all your user mods will still work. If you’re concerned, we recommend you install into a separate directory, and move one mod over at a time.

Enjoy blasting with and against up to three of your friends!

    WHHOOO!
    well done data

  12. The Punisher - # February 13th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

Hmmm, this is going at a slow speed. Im downloading at 10KB/s! I normally got around 300KB/s. Somthing with the host?

  13. Rz. - # February 13th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

umm so, i take it “Campaign” hasn’t been implemented yet?

  14. JLrep - # February 13th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

I’ve got 37.5 kb/s, which is normal for me downloading from here. Remember there’s a small chance there have been people refreshing this page constantly who are all descending upon this one file.

  15. Rz. - # February 13th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

@Punisher, there’s probably a lot of downloads (assuming people know this is out) and thus a bit of a drain on the server

One thing is that it only downloads at 2KB. Would it be possible to make a mirror on http://www.planetmirror.com so more people can download it at a time?

Data: You forgot to update the ‘download latest playable build’ link on the index page on datarealms.com

The AI still seems a bit stupid to me. A great improvement, but still a bit primitive. The mouse control feels a bit awkward to me, but it could be because I’m just so used to the classic keyboard control style. The co-op mode kicks ass though!

  45. jayhayhayhay - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

I AHTE YOU RZ. I DO!!! WHAT IS IT LIKE PLEASE I CANT WAIT. EVERYONE WHATS YOUR PERCENTAGE?

YES!!!!! but hmmmm waiiit a sec why doesnt it load properly :(

  56. mooseproduce - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:35 pm

Man, what you need now is to be able to buy ENORMOUS MECHS to stick the brain in. Like in that topic on the forums, I think– the artist had some SWEET concepts.

Right now you’ve got bread-and-butter ground units, but we need enormous mechs as well; then there’ll be interesting strategic decisions like “do I bomb the little guys peppering my mech, or go for HIS mech before it breaks my base open?” and stuff.

I can’t wait to convince my friend to play this with me. :D

  57. Mateo - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:45 pm

    Oh fucking hell yeah!

  58. Tomaster - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

    THANK GOD

  59. Galaxy613 - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

Sad to say, all is not well with this build right now. Apparently Data never tested the “Grasslands” scene which makes you automaticly win. Nevermind that both Classic Keyboard and Keyboard + Mouse share the same controls NO MATTER WHAT YOU MAP THE KEYS TOO! Say I map jump to W for classic, and then map jump to the Up Arrow for Keyboard + mouse, if the classic player has his rocket selected, then the key+mouse player and press the up arrow and launch the other guy’s rocket!

This test build isn’t even playable yet..

  60. BreenedandScrooned - # February 13th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Very nice job, Data, but the mouse aiming…really isn’t that good, it twitches around and stuff. But the new AI and shields are awesome. But when you’re reloading the other arm goes crazy.

  61. Robminder - # February 13th, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Can someone please tell me how to open and close the buy menu? I can’t open it when I send my rocket up, or close it after I die and order new units!

  62. UndeadHawk - # February 13th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Good for me i downloaded it before everyone noticed it was released ;D.

This is the best! I made the biggest scrap pile ever! The longest war there was :).

Didnt fancy that mouse aiming though :/.

New AI is great and i love this game

  63. Galaxy613 - # February 13th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Ok, I take back my statement about it’s not playable yet. I mean, it’s not even close to playable for keyboard+mouse plus classic keyboard action. I have not tested the gamepads yet. And I too switched from Key+Mouse to Classic keyboard because of the mouse aiming. :-/

  64. jockmo42 - # February 13th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

    damn it downloads too, slow..
ull just wait till tomorrow, thnx Data!

  67. iwillcontrolyou - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:03 pm

    DEAR GOD FINALLY! IT’S HERE!

  68. Juggz - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG -dies-

Data you have created a monster -points to 300 odd posts-

But i popular one, keep it up

  69. BreenedandScrooned - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

Data, you really need to tweak the mouse aiming, and make it so one player can’t control another player’s actors. I think I’m going to have to get Build 11 for Brain vs. Brain.

  70. makeshifter - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

i don’t want you to be a liar but most of my mods had problems actually all of them did this needs to be fixed. i vote every one update their old mods who’s with me

  71. Master Pimp - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

OMG I just sh** myself when I saw this im off to play it.

  72. Juggz - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

    Data, problems…

I keep controlling my brother rockets and buy menu with the arrow keys, his controls are WASD though. apart from that. this is awesome.

  73. Juggz - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

i control his buy menu for up and down, and he controls my buy menu for up and down. i think you got a small bit of code mixed up there. I can only make his rocket boost to, not steer it.

  74. korv - # February 13th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

    omg omg omg!!! finally :’)

Thank you for that link, P3lb0x, I was having download troubles, like so man other people. :P

  81. LetterSix - # February 13th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Now, I don’t want to rain on Data’s parade, but I would like to point out a few things after skimming over the game for a few minutes…

    1. There’s no point for grasslands, only one base so red always wins instantly.

    2. I find that even though the AI’s are much deadlier, it’s VERY easy to just send a rogue guy into their base and destroy the cpu’s brain. (Perhaps the computer can always supply a set number of guards to watch out for players?)

    3. Well… There is no number three… It’s perfect otherwise!

  82. alex - # February 13th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    1. game freezes for me around line 770 in devices
    2. Don’t understand why game loads everything beforehand
    3. HATE new controls
    4. Don’t know how to have multiple levels
    5. are campaign and scene editor supposed to work?

  83. LetterSix - # February 13th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

    1. Did you try reinstalling it? If yes… Can’t help you there
    2. The game is bigger now, it needs to load more, and does it actually bother you that it happens?
    3. What new controls? Aiming is pretty much automatic for gamepad and mouse, and you have to press B instead of A to buy and cancel stuff (on the gamepad)
4.Uuuh… What’s the question? When you select skirmish there’s a little tab in the top right to change the levels, even though only two work…
    5. No, an empty editor button has been there for a few updates now, and if there was actually a few campaign levels then Data should be worshipped as a god, cause’ that would take HOURS to make (depending on the quality, which we all know would be exellent, coming from Data)

  84. alex - # February 13th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

    1. yes, but fixed it
    2. on my computer, it takes FOREVER to load
    3. I’m just used to the old controls, but I reconfigured them
    4. “Select which scene you want to play in! (yes, really)”
I want to know if I can install OTHER maps, like
    Persh’s(spelling?) map.
    5. I was just asking if they were supposed to work. a few log entries ago, he mentioned the scene editor coming out soon, or working on it, or something.

  85. BreenedandScrooned - # February 13th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

I haven’t tried any other maps yet, but they probably don’t work. I’m pretty sure someone else tried Persh’s and Jago’s maps, but they didn’t work. It’s probably because the tool thing changed (I think).

  86. AquaGeneral - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

    Pros:
    1) New hud and level selection
    2) Choose where you can drop your supplies
    3) Shields
    4) Bombs filtered out from weapons which really shocked me
    5) Lets you play Prom Grounds

    Cons:
    1) Level Easy feels like level Hard because of the bots shooting you befroe you can aim
    2) Sharp aim comes automaticly making it awkward and I would rather Press B on the Xbox 360 Wired Controller and plus you cannot aim through walls that forces you to go out into the open instead of shooting through the ground to hit the enemies
    3) Enemies still try to dig themselves through the ground when ontop of brain.
    4) Mouse feels a bit awkward because when yo aim side-to-side it skips a little.

  87. AquaGeneral - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

    Sorry for the double post.

Overall I think it was worth the wait but some of the new enhancements create some drama’s.

Thanks for the Build Data, its awesome.

One thing I forgot to add
Pros: 2-4 player Co-Op and 4 player carnage.

  88. Barbalute - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:36 pm

Well, I was planning to do some studying for the three tests I have tomorrow, but it looks like that isn’t going to happen.
    Thanks for the new build!

  89. mcguinty - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

Thank you. This new build is made very well and the very few bugs I trust will be worked out. I would like to know if the scene editor will come out in a 12.5 like build.

  90. Durza - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

YAY! now wait for it to download…

  91. Thanatos - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:53 pm

Wow you guys are hypocrits. you are begging him for the new build, and then when it is out after sooo much pressure on data, you flame it! be thankfull you assholes, and let him fix it, only one person needs to report the problems, not 30!!!

    DATA, I LOVE IT!!!!

  92. Rz. - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

didn’t quite live up to the massive hype-but that’s to be expected-but the only fresh complaint i have is that it’s nearly unplayable in Windowed mode using keyboard & mouse, because it’s hard to get the aiming cursors to come up and even harder to move them. that’s just a minor thing, though.

  93. Barbalute - # February 13th, 2007 at 7:59 pm

Also, I like the new mouse aiming - it takes a little getting used to, but after that it’s a dream.
I have to agree, some bots on guard duty would be nice.
I like the automatic sharp aiming.
    It’s great! Thanks!

  94. jesus freak - # February 13th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

finally i can use the freakin’ bots to actually protect my brain

  95. Acehead - # February 13th, 2007 at 8:14 pm

    I flaking love you guys.

  96. Tacostank - # February 13th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

wow u rock data zomg (breathing) wow thank u so freakin much

  97. LetterSix - # February 13th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Thanatos, is it really wrong to critique the new build? Just because there’s some problems doesn’t mean i’m excited. I love it, LOVE IT. But no one, and nothing, is perfect. So, for the next build, I hope that I can bring problems to Data’s attention that he might not be aware of.

Btw, on thursday is the first whole day Cortex Command party. We’re hooking up my computer to the TV. Thnx Data, for making this multiplay meyhem possible!

  98. alex - # February 13th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

    BTW
is it possible to select and move summoned actors yet?

  99. Data's Fiance - # February 13th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Woot! Now Data once again becomes a living, breathing (and sleeping), human being!

  100. Juggz - # February 13th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

He deserves it, but i wouldnt mind if he took a few minutes to fix the control problem. Everything else can wait.

  101. Data - # February 13th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

    What’s the control problem?

  102. 21GP - # February 13th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

This is buggy. That’s because it ISN’T BORING!

    Data, this is horribly great.
    HORRIBLY!

P.S. I know this post seems kind of ambigious. So let me say that it’s awesome, just to be clear.

  103. BreenedandScrooned - # February 14th, 2007 at 12:28 am

When you’re doing multiplayer one player’s controls will control other player’s stuff, like actors and the buy menu.

  104. anonymous - # February 14th, 2007 at 1:10 am

I had that problem too , really made it quite unplayable

  105. Juggz - # February 14th, 2007 at 2:34 am

    DATA, the problem is this…

I have the controls (Arrow Keys, and numpad… defualt keys)
    My brother has (WASD, 123, Q, E)

When i have a rocket selected he can make it accelerate, he is also the only one who can control up and down on my buy menu.

Im the only one that can control left and right on his buy menu, and i may control his rockets too i haven’t tested that.

(In future i’d gladly be a tester for you Data as i play Brain vs Brain mostly)

Hope you understand what i wrote. :D

  106. Juggz - # February 14th, 2007 at 2:38 am

Also can you tell us how to add extra maps to the map list?

CC is coming along awesomely now, efore it looked like a tech demo. Now it looks like a game.

  107. anonymous - # February 14th, 2007 at 2:41 am

that is exactly the same problem with me juggz
does anyone know where I can download build 11?

  108. Nikola(Nikica) - # February 14th, 2007 at 3:19 am

    Really kool(with k)!!!

  109. anonymous - # February 14th, 2007 at 3:21 am

anyone know where I can get build 11? 12 just has lots of control bugs and I can’t really play it at all

  115. Data - # February 14th, 2007 at 7:09 am

Did you guys try to set up both players’ controls? IE if you end up controlling some things of another player, then you need to have both you and the other player try to go through the configuration sequence by using the ‘configure’ button. It will try to clear out the mappings.

Let me know if that works.

I’ve also found some other bugs which will be fixed in a patch shortly. So if you can calmly describe the problems you are having without just saying “it sucks!!1″, then please head over to the general CC forums and write it up for us.

    Thanks!

I don’t think anyone said “it sucks!!1″; people have, in fact, given you the exact problem in well-written sentences. For the most part.

I’m finally about to play this, but I have no friends (in the immediate vicinity) so only 1p for me. :’(

    hmm i know one bug.

    I changed the player 1 controls to arrows and numpad 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and enter

But when i press 4 and 5 to go buy menu i have to move in the menu with W and S to up and down and left and right arrows to left and right. so in the menu the up arrow and down arrow dont work but W and S somehow works…

And when you reload the arm starts to spin like crazy but i think someone has sayed it but im too lazy to read

Is it me, or does one player skirmish not work? Whenever I start it, it just says “WIN” and tells me to restart if I want to play again.

DATA, I’ve tried many many MANY times to configure each player. But somewhere in the code the controls are linked. Test it for yourself!

  121. SquallLeonE - # February 14th, 2007 at 9:29 am

    Nevermind… I think it’s just on a certain map it doesn’t work.

  122. Data - # February 14th, 2007 at 9:31 am

Squall, it’s only if you choose the grasslands scene… it’s because it only has one brain in it, therefore the game thinks one team has won. Try Prom Grounds or Grass Duel instead.

Galaxy, I’ve trying desperately to reproduce what you’re describing.. I’ve got two players, both classic keyboard setups with the recommended settings, no problems. Then i try to reconfigure them to swap the controls completely, and still no problems! Can you please describe exactly how many players you have, which players’ buttons are getting confused, and exactly what you have them set to? Thanks.

Downloaded in 2 seconds it’s pretty cool :D

  128. JLrep - # February 14th, 2007 at 11:45 am

Would it be a simple matter to increase the size of the aiming reticle? I think it would help calm down the complaints about mouse-aiming.
