Posted by Data in Cortex Command - November 20th, 2007

After the last post hyping things up a little, it’s time to dish out a counter to keep expectations in check with reality regarding the next release.

As some may have gleaned by now, the next version of Cortex Command will be the first one you can buy a license for. The plan is to release something that can be downloaded and played for free, but to get access to all the features you’ll need to buy a license key and unlock your installed copy with it.

We will have more details about how to buy and use the keys in a later post. Rest assured that we are trying hard to make it as flexible, affordable, and as little hassle to you as possible — while still ensuring that the seven years of work we’ve put into the project will pay off enough to allow us to keep working on it and future Data Realms games.

As for what will actually be in the version due out soon, please note that it is not going to have a complete campaign right off the bat. Currently there is only one complete mission, and half of it is a tutorial. There may be another mission done by time we put out the release, but it’s iffy.

This may or may not be a mission outline

Since the game won’t nearly be complete by the next release, the licenses are at first going to be heavily discounted from what they will eventually cost when the full campaign is done. If you buy a license at this early point, it will also unlock all future versions and updates up till where the full first campaign is complete and included.

Additional campaigns or expansion packs thereafter may have to be bought separately, but we haven’t planned that far ahead yet.

This is not to say that there isn’t tons of new stuff due for the next release - including editors and everything else hinted at in previous posts. Just don’t expect a full-blown campaign and metagame right away.

We will be rapidly adding missions shortly thereafter though, and working up to the point where there is a full campaign to play through. It will be up to you whether you want to play the missions on their own as they come out, or wait for the metagame mode we have planned (more details later).

Note that you will pay less the earlier you buy the license, since we going to gradually decrease the discount as the campaign nears completion and the game matures into the complete package we envision.

We hope this makes sense and isn’t too confusing. I’ll try to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Very impressive, Data. Your work is well worth supporting. :)

Is oil going to be a new resource of some sort?

Also, nice artwork lol.

Another update!? THANK YOU GOD!

I hope, new version will be soon. Creators, you are the BEST!!!

Sounds good to me, im eagerly waiting for the next release. : )

9. lmsyhmic - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:55 am

Oil and Metal should def be resources. Metal can be recycled! nice update. Are the campaigns open loop ended, or are there walls? Any word on Multiplayer? what is brow? what is Titan?

10. The Mushroom Man - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:58 am

Are the crabs going to be playable actors or are they just going to be “extra details” to add to the feel and realism of CC? Are there going to be any other animals? I think it would be cool if you made alien animals (since it is a far away planet and in the future) Since it is a crab does that mean that real water will be in the later versions of CC? Do you have a price yet? Could you give us a ballpark guess? Sorry for all the questions but you’ve made me want to learn all I possibly can about the future of CC.

Around how much are you thinking about charging for the this build to be “unlocked”? I ask this because I know alot of us in the forums are considering buying this asap.

12. trav - # November 20th, 2007 at 3:08 am

sounds similar to the mount and blade deal. I’ll be paying straight away, which is pretty rare for me, I almost never pay for games, but I DO like supporting small dev teams

13. JeCa - # November 20th, 2007 at 3:42 am

Helpcomputer, huh? I don’t mind whether there’s a complete campaign, what I want is full editors, doors, oil, and whatever that Titan is. ;) Also, are the brackets separate or do they both symbolize the Landing Pod, or some area where only your computer and not the opposition can land?

Another thing I’ve been thinking about for a while now; will there be any system to [discourage] the enemy (case you play vs a friend) from just landing troops on top of your defenses? Right now that’s really the most effective way to break defenses, but it’s so frustrating and so easy to do. I’ve got no idea how the AI will work in coming builds, but here’s an idea on one way you could solve it: a long-range AA turret, or something, that would ha a defense sector of, say, 25 degrees in both direction. now you’d mostly only be able to place it and not really control the tower. However if someone tried to spawn a ship within the turret’s control sector, it’d fire in that direction before the the delivery arrived. And then when the rocket spawned it would have a set amount of dmg allready, or maybe even be destroyed before it could unload any troops.

I’m sure there are loads of reasons why this won’t work, but I’d really like a system (not this one, just anything) to prevent the opponent from spawning on top of your brain other than giving him the message “Unable to spawn so close to the opponents brain”.

14. Asdrubale88 - # November 20th, 2007 at 3:49 am

- Walking brain?
- Help computer?
- Titan?

What’s MASSACRE? Another resource type? XOXO

15. Tyroazard - # November 20th, 2007 at 4:15 am

@Data:
Would you accept money via mail?
Also, you ‘do’ have a money exchange where you are, right?
Since I’m in HK because my parents have work hmere.
And.. Well, I got HKD.
>.>
That will be all.

16. Elpolodiablo - # November 20th, 2007 at 5:03 am

DO WANT. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

17. Hiro - # November 20th, 2007 at 5:56 am

Jeca, looks like the landing pad on the base means if you’re on defense you can only order onto the landing pad and if you’re on offense you will get shot down by the turrets if you order too far in.

Why’s that brain in the middle of nowhere though, lol.
And the titan looks like its a mech (or maybe an armored clone?) judging by all those little bullets spewing out the front and massacring all those lite troops.

18. war_man333 - # November 20th, 2007 at 6:13 am

Sounds pretty neat.
I hope we can pay easily

(PS, I’ll wish for Cortex Command as an advent gift :D)

Whoa whoa whoa, wait a second, SEVEN YEARS !?!!!?
whoa O.O :O
and i have been with cortex command only like few years :O
(i think first version i played was that you had to load the gold in to the rocket (no dropships) and the ground was really sinky and stuff like that ^^’

30. Treelor - # November 20th, 2007 at 8:49 am

Oh, nice, so I can still play a demo version of it without needing to pay for a key?

Good, because I’m broke right now :P

Oh yeah and parents: “INTERNETS BAD, ROTTING BRAIN”

31. Ryan Fox - # November 20th, 2007 at 8:50 am

So if we buy a license now, it will only work until v1.0? What if you update with bugfixes, or whatever else?

32. ChJees - # November 20th, 2007 at 8:54 am

O.O
I am even more hyped now! Keep up the GOOD WORK!

33. GSM - # November 20th, 2007 at 9:07 am

Will the campaigns be playable in cooperative play? So a team of 4 can try to beat a mission together?

34. zalo - # November 20th, 2007 at 9:14 am

Looks great.

You give me no choice other than to buy it.

35. Data - # November 20th, 2007 at 9:16 am

GSM: Yeah we are building it so that up to four people can cooperate in any of the missions.

karva: That particular crab is actually meant as harmless wildlife creature (hence the lack of health or team icon). There are other crablike actors though…

36. DeKapral - # November 20th, 2007 at 9:57 am

“it will also unlock all future versions and updates up till where the full first campaign is complete and included.”

Does this mean that when the first full campaign is out, we’ll have to pay again?

P.S. This game is awesome. I have a suggestion about the landing of dropships really close to the defender. How about just making a magnetic force/shield around the mother brain, which would repell enemy ships or an enemy ship controls jammer.

37. DiviX - # November 20th, 2007 at 10:17 am

OMGDATA!!

I CANT WAIT!

but plz data putthisinto the game:
1.(heard someone say it) gibbable MOPixel
2.make bullets or objects have the ability to emit stuff(for rockets and fire etc..)plz!
3.more firing sprites for weapons instead of only 2
4.a variable to make object spin or rotate at a certain speed and direction
5.NOTE:you may not understand this..:when an object or anything that gibs.when you set the spread range of the gibs make it also possible to set what DIRECTION it will spread
(E.g lets say an object will gib 10 MOPixels at a spread range of 45 degrees and at a direction of 90 degrees (clockwise so it spreads to the right)

i hope you under stand this cuz there will be awsome mods!! (if you implement this ofcourse..)

thx and keep up the good work!

38. brinlarden - # November 20th, 2007 at 10:18 am

nice one data. im pretty sure after the update, the standard bar for mods is going to have to be raised in coinsidence with the (im sure going to be) sexy new units and guns that the team has made. will you at somepoint show me a titan.
pretty please :D

oh and i think it would be cool if you brought back slo-mo and you made a kind of group select thing, enabling you to send multiple soldiers in waves at the attackers :)

39. Carp - # November 20th, 2007 at 10:31 am

Yeah, group selection would go perfectly with unit AI.

@Data: Lovely post, but that pic is UGLY. Where my pretty screenies, eh? Keep it up, I’m buying the first version available.

40. Control - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:06 am

Oil? Helpcomputer? Titan? Want and will buy.

Also, could we create our own campaign levels? Like kill X amount of enemies, defend for X amount of time, CTF, etc.?

41. Ghost Bear - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Well, i maybe will buy… maybe… Pirates are not sleeping…

42. Numgun - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:21 am

Wildlife eh?
I see you making the scenes so that there are even inhabitants and other living things that live while you fight. I like that. : )

43. Drone - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:37 am

So, If I’m reading this right, there will be an unfinished beta which is got by prepurchasing the game now with a huge discout, and then you get the full game when it’s done, then there may be expansion packs which may or may not have to be bought.

right?

44. Blipflip - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:47 am

Titan? helpcomputer? Wildlife? Oil?

Modding is gonna be FUN.

Also, I’m glad to see that CC will be able to support large maps without undesirable lagging.

Assuming you’ve improved that :)

45. Mikey - # November 20th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

1.Data, could you tell ( or tell again if i missed something ) whats the icon that haves somekinda head that gets hit by lighting in teaser time picture ?

2.Can you tell how soon there will be land vechiles if there is gonna be them at all ?

3.Will this next release have vechiles with guns ? Im more like meaning rockets, dropships, flying platorms etc. not like meaning walking turrets.

49. Silverfish - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:15 pm

“1.Data, could you tell ( or tell again if i missed something ) whats the icon that haves somekinda head that gets hit by lighting in teaser time picture ?”

I’m not Data but I know that it’s a picture shows a brain and a actor (clone/robot) and the lightning shows that the brain is controling the actor :-) .

50. robolee - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

karvabopi, vehicles will be possible :)
if maybe a little hard. leg= circular centre piece of tyre (animation = spinning disc) feet= lots of small treads going around it (because the leg is going in a circular pattern hopefully the feet will push the ground backward, thus moving the vehicle forwards)

51. MistaBombastick - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

Data plz post how much would it cost!!
BTW: Definetely buying :D:D!

52. Silverfish - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

Also, I have a VERY strong feeling that Data will give this to us as a christmas gift! :-D

53. robolee - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

the above is possible now if you have the foot as one big tyre with a hole in the middle, but I don’t know if it will work, actually I will see

54. magoo32 - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:22 pm

this is awesome… cant wait for the realeas i would defiantly buy the full version :D

55. KarvaBopi - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:32 pm

Oh yeah you are right Silverfish, it is the brain xD

56. KarvaBopi - # November 20th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

By the way Data, are you going to do anythng for the thing ( its not a bug kinda ) that single or few pixels float in air and units get stuck to them ?
Because usually i got problem when im trying to walk on ground, i usually get stuck on tiny pixels >.

66. Hiro - # November 20th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Ghost Bear, if you pirate this, you’re the most ungrateful bastard on the planet.
Data spent seven years on this, and he quit his job to work on this for people like you. You can’t spare $15 for someone’s 7 years of hard work? Don’t be like that.

So Data, with the knowledge that there actually are ungrateful earthworms who would stab you in the back even after all your hard work, you’ve got to find some kind of really really secure means of purchase.

67. MrX - # November 20th, 2007 at 3:27 pm

Jesus Mary and Joseph in a sidecar, this is epic.

68. The Black Line - # November 20th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Yay I can work for Data every cent I earn will be spent on license keys as long as there is a payment option I can use. Plus random draws in the forums for free keys from me if Data allows it. For security perhaps you could make it check to verify the key online and if it fails it permalocks it until you enter another code that came with your receipt then you can try entering the Activation key.

69. The Black Line - # November 20th, 2007 at 4:05 pm

Am I right?

83. Hiro - # November 20th, 2007 at 10:06 pm

Ya why must you hate steam? I mean it doesn’t matter that it’s only for windows and that it takes half of the money you make off the game for itself.

84. Mooseral - # November 20th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Any news on a modding update? Scripting would still be epic, or at least more ease/control with the current system.

One problem may be people making mods to emulate the new content for non-money-paying people. Perhaps mods would only work on an activated game? This may cause many an “o noes” to be heard, but it would also give incentive to buy the full game.

85. Tendrop - # November 20th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Data, price of next release plz?

86. AGENT15 - # November 21st, 2007 at 12:06 am

He says that he is looking for a discount for the first release which will get more expensive per new version, and that he wants to make it both cheap and profitable, so I would guess 8$ for the first version.

To be honest, I would pay up to twenty, since I know I’m getting a moddable game with a devoted developer (even though I’m paying for two copies, one for me and one for some other dude who I really hope isn’t scamming me or hes a cock)

87. nooby - # November 21st, 2007 at 12:07 am

88. StinkDude1 - # November 21st, 2007 at 12:09 am

Maybe Data could turn this into an Xbox Live Arcade game. The controls do work really good with an Xbox 360 controller. Or you could make it into a Playstation Network title, since the controllers are practically the same (The analog sticks are switched around. Big deal.).

89. razer - # November 21st, 2007 at 2:12 am

BAD IDEA!!! One payment will work better.

90. Shalafi - # November 21st, 2007 at 5:22 am

Well, if game is Steam-dependant it will be harder to crack and more people will buy it instead of downloading it from P2P. But only if it profits the encryption that steam offers.

91. Leevizer - # November 21st, 2007 at 5:30 am

“Offtopic
Leevizer, i have to guess that THor moron banned you? If so, send email to Data…”

How did u guess that Thor banned me? two warnings and, then permaban.
Already did. twice. No answer. So please, data. Could you send me an e-mail about this? If you have not gotten my emails, tell it. please? (i send them to the board administrator?)

PS: I. MUST. BUY. THIS. GAME!!!

92. Drone - # November 21st, 2007 at 7:14 am

But yeah sorry I forgot that steam doesn’t host the files for you so that your badnwidth doesn’t get raped, it wouldn’t be advertised in any way under new releases to the millions of people who use steam or have copy protection or anything.

Silly thing for me to suggest tbh

am i correct if i say that: we collect oil for vehicles and no oil=no gaz for vehicle?

96. Hiro - # November 21st, 2007 at 10:14 am

Rofl $8
Try $15
This game is just so good that I would feel guilty paying any less than $15
And I agree with mooseral about the mods. Find some way to disable mods for the demo version, otherwise people could just get mods like “All the new things in cc! Just drag the Base.rte folder into your cc folder and replace it!”

97. Hiro - # November 21st, 2007 at 10:24 am

Sory for double post, but STEAM IS A BIG NO. DATA IS RELEASING CC FOR MAC FOR THE FOURTH TIME, AND STEAM IS NOT FOR MAC.
Whef: the game isn’t done yet, he can’t release it.

Also, for security, Toribash disabled all the stolen keys with every new version they made somehow. So every update you put something in that blocks out certain keys that have been used twice.

98. Drone - # November 21st, 2007 at 10:58 am

If Data does use steam he’ll also probebly get more sales because Steam advertises new releases and top sellers (which I reckon CC will be tbh ¬_¬)

99. Noah Burkholder - # November 21st, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Whats with the Titan?, are you going to make it?

100. Azukki - # November 21st, 2007 at 2:10 pm

Post 100
Buying this the moment it’s out and I have the money.

I would like to know more about four legged actors. Can they also have arms? Can they hold weapons?

Also, will crouching and crawling for standard AHumans be in the retail version?

101. Drone - # November 21st, 2007 at 2:32 pm

If you just block keys that people use twice I’ll actaully have to crack the game because theres no way I’m buying any game twice just to have the luxury of playing it on my nice home PC *and* my laptop. I’d probebly still buy one copy but yeah :

102. Hiro - # November 21st, 2007 at 3:01 pm

DRONE
FOR THE LAST TIME
STEAM IS NOT FOR MAC, AND DATA IS PORTING CC TO MAC. STEAM TAKES PART OF YOUR PROFIT ALSO.

STEAM IS NOT FOR MAC, AND DATA IS PORTING CC TO MAC. STEAM TAKES PART OF YOUR PROFIT ALSO.
He’d get just as much publicity by posting his game on jayisgames.com macgamefiles.com, tigsource.com, digg.com (and have every cc fan digg it up), and downloads.com.

As for putting it on multiple comps, you could confirm with Data before entering it into a second copy. Kind of a hassle, but you obviously can’t trust your “fans”.

Oh and PS:

STEAM IS NOT FOR MAC, DATA IS PORTING CC TO MAC. STEAM TAKES PART OF YOUR PROFIT ALSO.

103. Drone - # November 21st, 2007 at 4:00 pm

I have no problem with steam, but it sucks. The only good thing about it is the good games.

109. Keiseth - # November 21st, 2007 at 8:04 pm

This is looking to be great and I’m excited… but my computer can barely handle the last version of Cortex Command and I’m doubtful it’ll be playable for me until that fateful day I can replace this computer.

However, if I happen to have money and the license is within the range of that money, I’ll grab a license, anyway. =)

But I thought I’d ask, where are you expecting the system requirements to go?

110. Mkoll - # November 21st, 2007 at 8:33 pm

It doesn’t have to be ONLY on steam. I would like it if CC were available on Steam though, because my parents got scammed, and lost hundreds of dollars to paypal, and would never use it again, but they trust steam.

Steam would also bring this game to so many more people, building the community, bringing in many potentially great modders.

111. TheLastBanana - # November 21st, 2007 at 9:03 pm

In terms of mods, I’d assume that new things that come such as actors and such will include variables that can’t be used in the betas. Probably, there will be some special way to transfer mods when this comes out, like with Toribash.
Anyway, this is looking pretty good, keep up the work. I’m sure it’ll pay off.

112. Hiro - # November 21st, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Special way?
Like uh…dragging all the mods from build 18 folder into the full game folder? Why wouldn’t that work?

121. KarvaBopi - # November 22nd, 2007 at 9:20 am

Gotta say this game is going over all my images of the next version, this game is doing good progress !!!

122. MistaBombastick - # November 22nd, 2007 at 9:55 am

One questions:
will you ever release online mode?

123. Afroded - # November 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 am

Seeing the [crappy] picture of the map, it made me think… will there be radars? It’s very annoying when you’re trying to guard one side on the base and you’re clone is getting attacked on the other. This kinda leads me to another sort of question, could you add like little scout hoverbots? so you could look at the battlefield, which leads me to another idea, hoverbots with guns? The scouts have no guns, but they’re small and fast, while the bigger one is slower, it can shoot back. I also have an idea of the scout can have like a zapper with short range, but can like fry machinery and paralize clones and bots.

P.S it looks like you drew that pic in MS paint…

124. Prospreo - # November 22nd, 2007 at 10:35 am

Can’t wait to see this, guys. You’ll be getting my bucks as soon as there’s a purchase page :)

125. RESOLUT - # November 22nd, 2007 at 10:35 am

Yep,it would be nice.I’ve got question too, will be there a walkers?Just imagine, walker delivered by giant jetpack on its back, it smashing littles clone by massive foot and it can destroy a bunker walls by a machinegun! How do you like it?^^

126. Hiro - # November 22nd, 2007 at 11:34 am

Online mode has been deemed pretty much impossible.
LAN is a possibility though, I heard.

And Resolut, with the new stuff Data is putting in, someone could easily mod a huge walker. It’ll be SWEET!

And uh..why would you need scout bots. You can move your view with the arrow keys, didn’t you know?

127. Drone - # November 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 am

Paypal is evil because when you sign up to them, they have the right to suspend your account and take your money for basically no reason (”Hey we “suspect” you of fraud your account is frozen here we shall take your money and then take money from your bank account to reimburse us”)

For exapmple:

Lowtax of SA started a red cross donation drive for the Katrina hurricane victims. Apparantly Charity work counts as fraud and confiscated the 10,000 dollars or however much it was, and refused to give it back. Lowtax eventually managed to get them to agree to give it to a charity of his choice, but then refused to give it to red cross because apparantly this would go against a previous deal with some US military charity. Eventually Lowtax had to get all the money back and individually send it to the however many people who had donated.

Another time, a friend of mine had about 200$ “confiscated” for having the nerve to sell to the same people multiple times. he never got his money back, even though all he did was sell things via ebay.

Theres plenty of stories like these at paypalsucks.com

128. Erahgon - # November 22nd, 2007 at 1:49 pm

161. Turkey - # November 24th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

Just to revive the whole Steam issue (and I’m sorry that I haven’t read through all 159 comments to see if any of this stuff has already been said), I think putting the game on Steam is a great idea. It’s not like putting it on Steam means Data can’t put it anywhere else. It can be on Steam AND Manifesto AND jayisgames AND etc… Really, the more ways you can buy this game, the better.

162. P-Flute - # November 24th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Highly awesome. Hopefully I can wrangle a few dollars from our groceries and bills for this when it comes around. By all means, though, Steam sounds like an awesome idea. As long as you can still distribute it in other places.

So what if they take a little money off the sales for hosting the game and showing it to hundreds of thousands of more potential customers. How much do you think a traditional publisher would swindle to put the game in a cardboard box?

163. Hiro - # November 24th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

STEAM TAKES A LARGE PART OF YOUR PROFIT.
Why would he put it on steam and lose a ton of money when he could get the same or more popularity from posting it everywhere else.

AND IT’S A SERIAL ACTIVATED GAME.
STEAM WOULD NOT MAKE IT ANY MORE SECURE.
This is what you would do if you were a pirate and it wasn’t on steam:
Download CC, find a pirated serial key, and enter it into your cc game.
Here’s what you would do if it was on steam:
Download it (from steam), and enter a pirated serial key into it.

Wow steam really saved lots of money here! Enough, I’m just copying and pasting this post every time someone brings up steam again.

164. JeCa - # November 25th, 2007 at 3:50 am

Also, @Turkey, Data’s already said that there’ll be TOns of ways to buy the game. I can’t tell if steam’l be one of them, but I think you will have enough options as it is. ;)

165. Drone - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:25 am

STeam takes about 50% of what you make because, y’know they are hosting the game, automatically updating it, actively trying to stop piracy, advertising it to people, having to run enough servers for 13 million people to download from.

Also using steam for games *clearly* doesn’t work becuase it’s not like Garry (form Garrys mod) lives off the income from having Gmod on steam, and it’s not like all the other game devs make any money at all by selling games on it amirite

166. TheKnife - # November 25th, 2007 at 10:29 am

HIRO: If you entered a pirated serial key in steam you would be permabanned.

167. Hiro - # November 25th, 2007 at 2:36 pm

You aren’t entering a serial key into steam, you’re entering it into cortex command.

168. XDevil - # November 25th, 2007 at 2:41 pm

…omg -_- data! i wont give u a no… but pls REALEASE THIS GAME JUST NOW! :)

_______
XDevil

169. PacificV2 - # November 25th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

HIRO: Even if you’re inputting the serial into Cortex Command, you would still have to use a special Steam CD-KEY (which is usually given out by the steam authentication servers and locked into your game - refer to DEFCON’s Steam launch) and you still have to buy the game to access the game.

170. Drone - # November 25th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

also you wouldn’t actually be able to download CC without buying it on steam y’know. Pirating wouldn’t work because steam actaully checks if serial keys are pirated or not.

171. Hiro - # November 25th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

But Data obviously isn’t using steam.
So why are you all still blabbering about it?
Data is not designing the game so that it is only compatible with steam’s method of registration.
If you think he should put it on steam and everywhere else, that’s stupid because it would defeat the whole purpose of putting it on steam in the first place: security.

So just forget about steam already and discuss more relevant things.

172. -E-S- - # November 25th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

OOPS! dont read the top one it got messed up :P

-data, i have tired emailing you but to no prevail. So, this was the email, i sent it a few weeks ago and some of the questions may have been already answered so here goes…

I have been drooling over the screenshots for too long. I need a mac port of cortex command. I bet I could get a charter with people wanting a mac cortex command signed at least 50 times. I have even made a mod for CC and havent been able to play it because cortex command is for windows. All I think is that instead of waiting to find a porter when CC is fully complete, we should act now and find one and port a test build :D. And i have a couple questions…

-whens the ETA of the finished CC project?

-will CC be commersial? (i understand if you need the money)

-do you already have a mac porter? (tons of really good prters may be able to port it if you need them, they would also do it for free even if the game goes commersial)

-if so will he/she port a test build before CC is complete?

-is CC portable?

-if i found a porter would you trust him with the souce code and not to release it

-Thanks

~Mike

173. -E-S- - # November 25th, 2007 at 5:00 pm

oh and if you release a mac version, ill buy it, and thats alot because i usually pirate all of my games. :)

174. Drone - # November 25th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

okay, and why isn’t data “obviously” using steam?

It seems perfectly sensible to me. Even if steam took 50% of the money he’d still make craploads more from the fact that there’d be about a 20 times bigger user base of people who might actaully want the game.

also, most games on steam weren’t designed to be used on it. CoH, Bioshock, CoD4 and Enemy territory quake wars.

Also, if steam has such poor profits on it, mind explaining how garry neuman makes like 100,000$ a month?

175. whitty2 - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

data just tell them that your not using steam.

176. Hiro - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Hmm I dunno, maybe because Garry’s mod is a $10 addon to one of the most popular games on PC?
Meanwhile, Cortex Command is a virtually unknown 2d shooter.
And where did you get $100,000 from? lol @ bogus facts.

Just to clarify, does steam take part of each sale you make or do you have to pay them first? If it’s the former, then Steam would actually be a plausible idea, because even if CC sells only a few copies on Steam then data wouldn’t be losing money, just so long as he advertises it elsewhere.

177. Carp - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Wait, shouldn’t you re-post 163 at yourself for bringing up Steam? :P
Seriously, folks, what good does arguing about it do? Data’s not a moron; he knows distribution is important, and so he’ll look into it himself.

178. -E-S- - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

with the whole steam thing i dont think data wants to make his game that huge, he just wants to make it shareware so he can earn some profits to fund in the making of CC. i meant doesnt want to make the game that huge.

179. -E-S- - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Oh and Data could you please answer my questions? i know its a bit too near the final release but i emailed you like 4 weeks ago. and in the next test build that you have to pay, will it be for mac???? ill buy it!!

180. Hiro - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

I already asked Data a while back, he said he was going to port it to mac as soon as he made the first real version of CC, which is the next one.

And I think Data would want it to be huge. I mean, he spent 7 years on it, why not?
Anyway it’s up to Data so theres’ not point in us arguing about whether or not he’s using it.

181. -E-S- - # November 25th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

nicely done hiro. if he releases a mac ver next release i will shit my panties and kill myself. (in a good way ^_^)

182. Drone - # November 26th, 2007 at 5:21 am

dude, Cortex command could easily be more popular than garrys mod. also, keeping Cortex command unknown by advertising it on websites isn’t exactly going to make it more known is it?
Steam has like 13 MILLION users, all of which actaully play and buy games. If you just advertise on some websites you aren’t exactly going to get millions of gamers running to the site to purchase it, because when I browse websites I seldom care or want to buy what is being advertised.

valve takes 50% of each sale, but then again you get craploads more sales.

Also garry makes a 6 figure income off Garrys mod. Even though he only makes like 5$ per sale he gets like 20,000 purchases a month, and in my honest opinion, I think people will like cortex command a lot more than Garrys mod.

183. Drone - # November 26th, 2007 at 6:55 am

actaully, it might not be 50% for games that don’t use source. I know that Garry gets the HL2 source code because he’s making a source mod, so for games that don’t use source it could only be like 30% or something.

Anyone else read STFU as stuff you? (I know what it means, it’s just stuff you springs to mind when I read it.) :P

186. AGENT15 - # November 26th, 2007 at 9:09 am

I read it as “Stiffoo” or “stuffoo.”

I can’t wait for this weekend, hopefully Data will release build 19 by then! I want to throw money at Data!

187. XDevil - # November 26th, 2007 at 10:29 am

DATA? are you going to port the next one to mac? *prays*

PUH-LeeeeaaaaasseE!!

189. Data - # November 26th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

ES, sorry didn’t get around to your email yet. In short: Both MacOSX ports and steam distribution are very real possibilities we’re looking at.

Neither are exclusive, meaning the game will still be available for other platforms and distribution channels.

190. blacklionxx - # November 26th, 2007 at 7:58 pm

i just cant wait till next weekend(hopefully all goes well)

191. -E-S- - # November 26th, 2007 at 8:18 pm

Thanks Data! So does that mean that there may be a macosx port coming around the next release or later?

192. Mjolnir - # November 26th, 2007 at 9:57 pm

I’m curious where you people get these facts about Steam profit-sharing.

50%, 75%, most, all, none. You guys are making shit up.

Just stop and let him do it however he pleases. Needy motherfuckers.

193. Hiro - # November 26th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Oh man.
I really hope you release the Mac port at the same time, because I don’t know what I’d do if I saw
CORTEX COMMAND COMMERCIAL BUILD 1
DOWNLOAD WINDOWS VERSION
MAC VERSION UNAVAILABLE

I mean it can’t be all that hard to port because it doesn’t use DX, and it’s all text text text and images. The only windows part is the .exe that puts all the text together. Right? RIGHT?!

194. Data - # November 26th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Unfortuantely, mac port will not be out at the same time of the next version.

195. Erk - # November 26th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

Data,

Can you tell us a ball-park estimate on pricing?

196. RESOLUT - # November 27th, 2007 at 5:32 am

Data, please post new Devlog with something new, with one clone, bunker modules or that crab thing for example? I don’t mean to post all of it,just something new.PLEASE!

197. Octyl - # November 27th, 2007 at 8:14 am

Wow, I am REALLY looking forward to this. And Brawl. And Spore. I just wish I had a job… >.

198. AGENT15 - # November 27th, 2007 at 9:09 am

Oh hush. Data will be releasing “soon.”

Making an update would just make the release take that much longer.

199. Mushroom King - # November 27th, 2007 at 9:15 am

Oh anyway, when this game going to be released?

200. RESOLUT - # November 27th, 2007 at 9:58 am

Yeah when?

201. tison345 - # November 27th, 2007 at 10:01 am

200th post!

And, what is oil for?

202. tison345 - # November 27th, 2007 at 10:02 am

Sorry, just saw Data’s post. Darn, I was hoping we’d get oil

203. Mooseral - # November 27th, 2007 at 10:15 am

Some thoughts on distribution:

Steam along with other, mac-friendly forms of distribution might not be a bad idea at all… Steam has a large user base, and more pirate protection than key activation; It could prove a very helpful tool to get CC out.

All of the problems discussed with Steam would be fairly nullified if combined with other distribution routes, also. Personally, I prefer non-steam games as they are more flexible, but hey, same thing as above; If a keyed or other type of version were available, very few gripes about steam could be found.

Also, about the taking 50% of profit: Garry Newman is distributing on steam, and only gets 5$ a pop for Gmod; But he also seems to be a millionaire now. Doesn’t sound like so bad a deal.

So, steam+other routes makes the doodz and the data the happies.

204. XDevil - # November 27th, 2007 at 2:09 pm

…*waiting

205. Hiro - # November 27th, 2007 at 2:32 pm

Thanks for the update XDevil, that was really helpful!

Oh maaaan.
No mac port on release day? That sucks. I’m getting tired of beating call of duty 1 for the fourth time.

206. XDevil - # November 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Hey u play cod? IM TOO!!.. have some one ICQ?!??!!… ups..is this “realy Helpfull”? xDDD l8r
****more waiting..-__^

207. XDevil - # November 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

ARGH! :P IT WAS “HIRO”! O.o .. kk^^

208. -E-S- - # November 27th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

No mac version?…… aww…….. *eats cupcakes to ease the pain*

209. Afroded - # November 27th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I think I really should…

I don’t think CC is as amazing as anyone says it is.

Please don’t get angry, but I bet not to many people play this every day, huh? I’m not sure but I’m quite sure there are people that agree with me.

ANYWAYS! I think it IS starting to look good. And steam probably is a good idea, though it should take some time to get on Mac. I hope this game turns out well when it comes out.

PS. Please don’t get down, Data. Keep working on it, I’m still a fan.

210. AGENT15 - # November 27th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Why would any sensible person get angry?

It’s just your opinion. You aren’t flaming it or anything.

Only XDevil and the other retards will get all pissy, since a lot of people do over hype Cortex Command.

211. Hiro - # November 27th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

Why is everyone saying porting it to mac is gonna take forever? THE WHOLE GAME IS TEXT X_X

212. Grif - # November 27th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

Wow the devlogs have gone to shit, or at least the comments.

Anyways.

“Also, about the taking 50% of profit: Garry Newman is distributing on steam, and only gets 5$ a pop for Gmod; But he also seems to be a millionaire now. Doesn’t sound like so bad a deal.”

I imagine Garry’s status as a millionare has something more to do with his practice of charging forum users 1000 dollars for…basically no benefit. And yet people payed.

Hiro:
“Why is everyone saying porting it to mac is gonna take forever? THE WHOLE GAME IS TEXT X_X”

Perchance Data doesn’t have a mac that he can get on long enough to download the source code and compile the game on yet?

213. AGENT15 - # November 28th, 2007 at 12:05 am

The entire game isn’t text. (As far as I know.) And I’m pretty sure Data uses some game development tools, and since Macs use different file types (extensions, etc) it would take work to port, rather than a simple copy and paste. At least, that’s as far as I can tell.

214. RESOLUT - # November 28th, 2007 at 2:51 am

HMmm…I’ll better wait full version playing TeamFortress:2.

So no.

218. Drone - # November 28th, 2007 at 11:08 am

Grif:

a: last time I checked there was no more gold membership because there were too many idiots joining them spamming and acting like they owned the place.
b: that was only 10$ anyway, although some stupid retard child (Who had access to his PARENTS PAYPAL ACCOUNT, which had THEIR MONTHS RENT IN IT) clicked the “Gold membership” button which garry had set to 1000$ for a joke, (note, all the boxes and stuff CLEARLY stated 1000$, he was just too goddamn retarded and was egged on in an OIFY thread about it)
c: He’s basically a millionaire because he made a good game, not becuase he “Charges forum users for basically nothing”. If anything, that’d be Lowtax from SA because on SA you actaully have to pay for Avatars and stuff. Although so many people post there that the bandwidth bills are huge so that’s okay tbh.

Is the November release still on, or is the release date being pushed back into December?

it’s due tommorow. yay

227. AGENT15 - # November 29th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

Don’t expect Data to release it tomorrow. I’m not doubting Data, it’s just that it doesn’t seem likely, and you don’t want to be disappointed if Data releases it sometime in December.

Sorry to doubt you Data, but something this awesome can’t be released on time, it violates the fourth law of thermodynamics.

228. robolee - # November 29th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

I somewhat lack faith that it will be out for tomorrow…

229. Tendrop - # November 30th, 2007 at 5:54 am

233. robolee - # November 30th, 2007 at 9:33 am

Please, post it. =’(

239. Charlie Wood - # November 30th, 2007 at 2:52 pm

Late in responding here, but as a Brit I really hope that Data Realms will take PayPal payments for Cortex Command. If not paypal, at least take Switch/Solo/Maestro. Too many american shops are anal about accepting british bank cards (Cafepress being one perpetrator), and tend to be MasterCard/Visa/AmEx only.

Plus, I have never experienced anything bad with paypal to date, and I’ve been using it for a year now.

240. TFSR - # November 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

Data, don’t worry about the November deadline. I’d rather see b19/rc1 on Dec. 14th or something than on Nov. 31 and have it be as glitchy as B15.

241. TFSR - # November 30th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

“future Data Realms games”
I just noticed that now. Holy fuckstick.

242. Pieman280 - # November 30th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

I knew I couldn’t trust that release date!

this happens to all the games. they say they’ll have it released on a date and then on that very day, you’re so hyped up on playing with awsome things and they push it back a week and then on that day they push it back again. :(

243. Ringwall - # December 4th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

Well, did you see what happened to Tribes 2 when they made them release it on their first planned release date? Maybe not even heard of; the game is so unpopular due to it’s Unhandled Exceptions. Push a game when it’s not done = f**ked up game that won’t work half the time.
