Prom sent me this from 4chan… have no idea where or when it came from, but damn if isn’t great:

Future of Games

Considering it refers to the year 2000 as some semi-distant future, I’m impressed by its accuracy!

Probably the most accurate “In the future” thing I’ve seen.
Theres one with the “Home computer of the year 1990!” and it’s a hulking monstrosity that takes up a third of a room with valves and shit.

  2. ToonyMan - # December 4th, 2006 at 6:20 am

    I know the future. 😮

  3. Foogooman - # December 4th, 2006 at 7:48 am

    LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY! WOWZER!

    Hey…

    Wait…

    This isn’t cortex command! >:(

  4. The Punisher - # December 4th, 2006 at 9:39 am

Thats ugly… and it isnt Cortex Command

  5. G-Master - # December 4th, 2006 at 11:52 am

Wow, pretty accurate! Apart from the “handheld display” thing, which isn’t “ultra realistic” yet, it’s VERY accurate!

Wow, it’s not often that things like this come true.

I remember reading a quote from some scientist, circa 1960, “Man will never step foot on the moon”…

But still, miniature radio transmitters and receivers?

  7. RustyBadger - # December 4th, 2006 at 12:23 pm

This is the greatest “In the future” I’ve seen:

Again I say ,cortex command? I thought this was a dev log reserved strictly for development news. this seems to be one person posting an interesting picture in the wrong place , don’t you have a forum for this kind of stuff?

  9. anonymous - # December 4th, 2006 at 12:39 pm

Bad Idea data, while I hugely respect you don’t mess around in the dev log stick to development news

    And 4chan is evil 😀

  11. Data - # December 4th, 2006 at 1:24 pm

This is a general development log for Data Realms, not specific to any one project. This was posted under ‘general’ as an interesting game industry/technology related thing I got a kick out of.

    Sheesh lighten up and unclench.

Sadly, Rustybadger, that image is fakey. It’s actually from some kind of maritime vessel or something which someone thought’d make a jolly good “Computer Of Tomorrow!” and so they stuck the caption on.

Also, neither that or the main image are Cortex Command! Fix it! 😉

    Holy crap, that is close!

    Nice find Data.

These Commandophiles need to calm down. =.=

  14. Foogooman - # December 4th, 2006 at 7:42 pm

Data, you should know that for some reason, the newest install that you put up, the characters just aim up. I tried re-downloading, re-installing with differant re-downloads.

fooogoo… try unplugging any and all your game controllers/joysticks from your computer before running the game. Let us know if that fixes the problem.

  16. Foogooman - # December 5th, 2006 at 7:37 am

    Ah, that worked, thanks.

It looks like an Usborne book – I used to have a bunch of them when I was a kid that helped me learn to program in BASIC and assembly.

As for the game in the bottom right, I have two words:

    STEEL BATTALION

  18. Naka - # December 8th, 2006 at 3:56 pm

    lol, 4chan.

  19. Alan Pope - # December 29th, 2006 at 8:00 am

I agree, it’s from an usborne book for sure. I actually recognise it from a book I had as a kid. I saw the pic in the bottom right and had a double-take style flashback to my youth.

In fact, googling for the first line turns up this on usenet:-

    http://groups.google.co.uk/group/rec.games.video.classic/browse_thread/thread/9eb738a49509e629/4338aedbe6f9853c?lnk=st&q=%22within+ten+years+the+computer+games+of+today%22&rnum=1#4338aedbe6f9853c

“While I was cleaning out my bookshelf, I found a book relating to video
games that I haven’t read in ages. It is titled “Usborne Guide to
Computer and Video Games” Basically they are like a For Dummies book
that explain how the video games and computer worked and how to win at
many of the popular games. It is circa 1982. “

Of course video games have miniature radio transmitters for long distance gaming. Ever heard of WiFi?

  24. Pro Game News » The future of gaming is now - # January 2nd, 2007 at 11:46 am

[…] With the constant march of progress in technology and computer design, it can be hard to appreciate just how far video gaming has come in a relatively short period of time. Now that we’re seven years past what was once considered the standard-bearer year of “the future,” it’s amusing to look back at what was once considered “the future of gaming.” […]
